Hi, My Mal is 10 weeks old and always seems hungry, I'm feeding him proplan twice a day with mince in the afternoon, is this enough?

cheers

I would be feeding a 10 week old puppy 4 times a day and also giving him some goats milk inbetween.

At that age he needs to be fed 4 times a day - his stomach isn't physically large enough to contain the amount of food he needs in fewer, larger meals.

I am amazed that anyone could only feed a puppy two meals a day.  He must be absolutely starving, and losing weight when he should most definitely be gaining.  If he falls ill, he isn't going to have any reserves.

I give my new puppy owners a full feeding plan.  Didn't the breeder give you full instructions on feeding?

I'm with you JeanSW, amazed that someone breeding a giant breed did not make sure the new owner knew how much the pup needed and how many meals that food should be divided into.  It is important for all breeds of course but particularly so in a breed that will be laying down bone for a lone while yet.

Hello and welcome.  Like the others have said he does need to be on 4 meals.  I'm not sure whether you are feeding the mince as a seperate 3rd meal but even if that is the case he is still short.

I'd be a bit worried if the breeder didn't give you a full feeding plan but don't panic, you can probably get the information you need on here.  Alternatively ask the breeder for more information and to see whether you can make contact with owners of siblings.  I used to compare eating amounts and timings with my breeders pup but also with the other puppy owners in the litter - it's great to compare notes!

The other thing is that some pups are always hungry (or somehow manage to convince you that they are).  I had a shouter whose tummy clock went off at regular intervals and who would transport his food in a nanosecond.  It takes a while for them to register they've been fed so for another 20 minutes or so he'd act like he hadn't eaten anything    ...then crash in a post food sleep.

Your breeder should be your first port of call for advice - it's their role - but if you need a bit of extra advice do ask.  There are some great breeders on here who will be wiling to help steer you in the right direction.  Incidentally it might be useful for you to tell us the weight of your boy, and the amounts that you feed each meal.  You might be lucky to find someone on here to compare with :)

I feed my large breed pups 4 meals a day at 10 weeks which is cut down to 3 at 12/14 weeks. Then it is 3 meals until the pup is 6 months, then its dropped to two which it then stays on for life.
When you cut down on a meal you must increase the quantities in the other meals. Proplan is a very good food and I use the large/robust puppy food but you must feed enough for a tiny pup. When he has a growth spurt, height wise, hes going to start looking a bit on the lean side.

On Mal number 6 now LOL.Up to 4 months I fed my pups 4 meals a day,my puppy is now 20 weeks and is fed 3 meals a day.Breakfast is a good quality kibble, with an occasional raw egg(including shell)or a spoonful of probotic yogurt. When 8 - 12 weeks they had a teaspoon of honey and goats milk.Lunch is normally chicken wings -raw and dinner is raw mince, alternated between lamb, chicken alittle offal, beef. With this they have a spoonful of minced raw veg/fruit.Occasionally they will have lamb/pork ribs and raw pig ears in Lieu of lunch or dinner. Before 20 weeks they had an extra meal of kibble, spaced evenly during the day. When they are about 6 months they are fed entirely on RAW.The only supplements they have are a garlic capsule as I dont use propriatory flea treatments and cod liver oil.Though BARF isn't for everyone,4 meals of good quality kibble is fine(ideally one that is fairly high in protein),but I would still offer raw chicken wings occasionally instead of kibble.I also gave my Mal and CED pups bottled water for the first week(or filtered) as I have found from experience changing from an area of hard/soft water or vice versa can cause tummy upsets on a young undeveloped tum.
I had diet sheets from my breeders I(though afetr Mal no 3 they didn't bother LOl),and am surprised your breeder didn't offer dietary advice.

I used to feed proplan and it has all the instructions on the pack explaining to split the daily amount of feed into 4 meals a day. Infact i must have really over fed my male dobe as he was on 5 meals a day at this age and ate all his daily requirement plus half again on the amounts suggested on the pack. You can generally tell if you have fed too much as the pup will just start to produce diarrhoea rather than a formed stool. Let your pup guide you, but remember he still has a small tummy so small meals regularly are much better.

I know my puppy is a lot smaller than a Mal, but although I try to feed her 3 times a day she often only wants to eat twice. I've given up trying on 4 times altogether! But yes, a large breed puppy should be happy to eat 3 or 4 times a day at this age.

I'm guessing the pup is getting fed 3 meals a day, not 2 as some have suggested? 'Proplan twice a day and mince in the afternoon'
I'd up it to 4 and see how the pup goes. I think our Mals were started on 4 meals then gradually reduced to 3 and so on. :)
Mallies are little pigs though, perhaps speak to your breeder for some advice.
