Does anyone have one of these?

If so, how do you find it? How does it work and most importantly, can you use it in the dark without a lamp?

Don't have one but there was a news report on them on yahoo saying the kindle is dear enough but the books are often far more expensive than the proper books...

The Kindle versions are not more expensive at all. I have looked into it quite a lot as I read around 3 books a week and am running out of space so am getting a Kindle for Christmas according to hubby. :) The e-books for the Sony Reader costs more than those for Kindle. Yesterday I looked at "Mini Shopaholic" by Sophie Kinsella. Brandnew hardback book (published on the 2nd of September 2010) that cost £9.49 in Tesco. In Amazon it costs £8.99 or just £5.98 for the Kindle version. In WH Smith £11.89 for the hardback or £7.76 for the e-book version for the Sony Reader.

I was going to ask for one for Christmas but I'm not sure if I can wait that long!! Also, today is my 15th day as a non-smoker so I feel I deserve a treat much before the festive period!!! :)

This is top of my Christmas present list too.
Also....I am getting impatient....and want one .....NOW.
15 days is worthy of note, is that enough money saved on cigarettes to cover the cost of one yet????
Every time I feel guilty about spending on myself, I think about the cost of smoking, if I was still paying out for 'fags'.

I reckon I have saved about £50 but my patches are £15 a week so I have only really saved £30!!! I am hoping if I am nice enough to the hubby he might think I deserve one....

My maths is terrible - I have actually only saved £20!! I feel a bit depressed now.

Very well done to you. I quit just over 6 months ago now and rather than patches, I used the inhalator and vary rarely now do it need to use it. Do treat yourself, little and often :-)..

There is a lot of info on Amazon for the Kindle and they do 2 different types. You can get many books on there cheaper than it you were to buy them in a paper copy. Its is in black and white though, so no nice coloured animation.
Not all books are available, mainly courses books, and many dog training books as it stands on Amazon

How many did you smoke a day and were they roll up's or normal cigarettes. There is a NHS website which has a site which works out how much you have saved on a rolling day to day basis and keeps tabs of the days you're smoke free.

I have been smoke free for 199 days and I have saved £610.00 now.

I was on menthol cigarettes - About £6.50 per packet. I'm going to find the site now..... (rushes off to work out savings!)

I love that! Since stopping, I have not smoked 213 cigarettes and I have saved £69.39 - Much more than I thought!! :)

I have just 20% sight and read by getting closer to the page.  According to a program I saw they reckoned it was as easy as a normal page to read in bright light.

I've got one :D it's fab!!!

Got the international version that came out the latter part of last year. 

It's really easy to use and the books download in seconds! 

The screen is not backlight so you do need a light on to read(just like a normal book) 

I've not found the books to be any more expensive and the selection is good.  Used to get my morning paper on it,only stopped as I commute early in the morning and found it wasn't arriving til I was in the office (around 645 - would arrive about 630 but was underground by then!)

text size can be adjusted to suit your preference with 8 choices of text size. 

The battery is good and lasts around a week and use it normally between 1-2 hours a day on the train as well as a bit of night time reading. 

Would now be lost without it and find reading a normal book cumbersome!

Well might go for one next year, after Christmas, hopefully they Will come down in price and more books will be available, though I do buy most of my bocks on Amazon anyway.

Their selection is pretty good!  have a look at the kindle store on amazon.  I've not so far found they haven't had a book i was looking for.  The uk kindle store has only just opened and i used to buy them from the usa store and again the selection was good.

What I meant to say in my previous posts is that there are many practical dog training books that aren't on Kindle yet. I was looking at Vets books and also Canine Hydro and Physio books, again which aren't on there yet.

haven't looked at that sort of books.  Normally buy novel or auto/biographies.  Can't concentrate at 6 o'clock in the morning on anything too serious!

Right wish list, they are out of stock at the moment.  Would I need the 3G version, or is that just applicable to being able to download, not just to read?

You can have just wifi or wifi and 3G. If you can access wifi then just wifi will be fine but if not you would need 3G - I think!!

I guess the benefits of 3G would be that if you were not in a wifi hotspot then it would switch to 3G and you would still be able to download books etc.

Re sunlight, barbera I'm currently sat in the office withthe sun bouncing off the screen and can read it no problem at all!

I would go for the 3G model personally as then if you finish one book you can download another straight away and not have to wait til you get to a wifi area or connect to a computer.

I like reading and always have a book on the go and a stock of books to read (thrillers), but I've never considered one of these and, liking my gadgets as I do, you've now got me thinking!  What do you like so much about it?  For some reason I like having a book book - there is no reasoning behind this, probably just because it's what I'm used to.  On seeing the advert the other week, my husband did comment that he was surprised I didn't want one of these.

You said you got your paper delivered to it.  Can you get magazines to it too then (like Heat for example).

I'm intrigued (and probably soon to be £100+ out of pocket!).  :)

I should maybe add, that I don't re-read books or keep them.  Once I've finished a book, I'll pass it onto one of my friends or family for them to enjoy (in case this makes a difference to my experience of the Kindle).

I don't think that's any more likely than leaving a laptop behind -you tend to be more careful with more expensive items. :)

My current top reason for buying a Kindle: it will just be ONE item to keep out of reach of Monty the Cavalier puppy who is going through a phase of removing books from the lower bookshelves and chewing them up! :o

Here goes for my explanation of why I love my kindle

I like the lightweight of it and also spending a reasonable amount of time commuting, hated having the extra weight of a second book in my bag when i was nearing the end of one book.

I also love fact that you can download a book in minutes (3g signal providing) so unless I'm on the tube I can get a new book downloaded as soon as I finish the last one. 

I used to be like you and was a bit sceptical at first (it was a christmas pressie) but I find now a normal book feels odd!  I do like that you don't get a sore hand or finger from holding the book open in the middle.  It's weight is nice and sits nicely in your hand.  Also love that you never loose your place either as it remembers where you were!

Most books I read are lightweight novels so don't tend to read them again, but the prices are reasonable so don't mind that.  It holds tons of books so no need to delete them off once you're finished unless you really want to!  Not sure if you can copy a book to another kindle (never tried it as don';t know anyone else with one!)

There are some magazines available and i would imagine now that it is being officially launched over here, more will be electronic.

The only thing you have to be careful with is if you buy one of the amazon covers for it.  the only one available when i got mine, fixed to the kindle using 2 tiny tabs on where the spin of the book would be.  There were loads of reports on the internet of this fixing casing the kindle cover to crack.  I made do with a couple of elastic bands round it to hold the back cover to the kindle until i bought a cover that it slids into.

not sure how many but seem to be plenty of choice.  Amazon reckons it;s got more than 415,000 books on there!

Kindle arrived........

I love it; so easy to use and already all my family want one.
Elder son had one of previous generation but also wants to upgrade to this.
the only very minor irritation is the shadow as you turn the page, having said that I am used to it all ready.

All those free books are amazing to have now at hand.....Dickens, Shakespeare and many other classics.
