can a steward be stewarding in the ring when a dog they co-own be bring shown in the same ring ?

Can't see why not.  Even if it's their own dog (obviously someone else would be handling it).

No reason at all why would there be? Many stewards ask if they can show first and then steward afterwards and you allow that if you can cope but you have to have some stewards available from the very start of judging and if they wish to show then someone else has to handle.

I think as long as the judge does not know this is your dog then not a problem. If the judge 'knows' you/your dog then you should not steward until after your dog has been shown & depending on the prize then you can steward after(if you win your class then you should not steward until after your dog has finished showing).

There is no rule, it's one of those etiquete rules

Not really the done thing but not against the rules. I was showing our boy for the first time ( in a small open show) my hubby was stewarding in the next ring, didn't help me much when he called out for the next class :( oh there's my dad, thinks the dog, let's take Mum to see him.......  

I was later entered in a  beginners class in husband's ring, he "went for a break" and got someone else to steward.

thanks for the replys, i was just wondering, didnt think you could but glad you can, as hubby is just starting on the judgeing path and is going to steward at a few local shows so i will be me showing all the dogs (but the dogs are all in my name and so is my affix,) i just hope he stewards for other breed as i dont fancy being dragged to see dad!!!!    LOL. xx

You could not show under him but you can if he is the steward mind you it would only be on the odd occasion he would be in your ring and he should ask the secretary for a different ring as most would prefer you not to steward in the ring if your dogs are being shown there but I think it is worse to steward for your OH  because the exhibitors would not know who was actually judging.

It would be a problem for most people showing in a ring with someone the dogs know well as they would not concentrate.

Unfortunately yes, though I really do think that stewards should not be allowed to discuss dogs with the judge but have seen this happen!

Think that at times it is possible to mistake the discussion of ring procedure or the judge telling the steward what they are about to do, like short list or the fact that there is one more to come for a chat about the exhibits. No one would want the steward to judge for them people who judge I am sure would wish to have things their way, they may say something like I am sure that dog is lame  or to ask if a dog was seen or not, but I have never ever had a judge ask me for my opinion on the actual exhibits and I have never asked the opinion of the steward either.

It is however why I said the judge & steward should not be partners what ever the partnership arrangement is I have had a judge go to discuss the class with his boy friend sitting at the side of the ring, the partner may be well qualified but they are not who the exhibitors have entered under.

Sadly at least one experience I know that they weren't discussing ring procedures!  Though it doesn't happen often.

One of those 'grey' areas I think. Nothing against the rules but I feel it is ethically wrong. We have had a situation where the club put on a obedience competition, and the obedience steward handled their dog in the 'show'part of the show. Again, no rules against it but ethically - not right!

I wouldn't see anything wrong, particularly in Crinklecut's example when it was obedience and show, but for myself I wouldn't do it purely because it's too difficult to manage dogs in crates as well as steward! If hubby was interested in either than yes, I would make sure I wasn't stewarding even the same group as he was showing or vice versa.

This is the same as Open show societies not allowing their committee members to show, I agree it would not be good for those who appoint judges to do so nor the Show secretary or Show manager but it should not a problem for the rest.
