Hi,

Wondered if anyone could offer any advice. We have a 10 week retriever bitch who was so placid when we got her. After a week of having her I thought she was sleeping too much, getting more lethargic. I then noticed how many times she was going for a wee, mainly in the first 2 hours of being up. On Tuesday she then started wimpering when going, stopping after a couple of seconds and then looking around at her bottom. She had also been licking that area so much over the weekend. I took her to the vet with a sample. He said it didnt show up much, a little bit of bacteria common with infection, and with what I was describing, prescribed anti inflamatory for 3 days and then 7 days of antibiotics for cystitus. After 3 days she really picked up, boisterous, into everything normal puppy behaviour which we hadnt seen! She is crated at night, so I seperated her bed area, put paper down, put some of her wee on top to scent and she has gone at night there. Only seems like once or twice.

My concern is, I have noticed a lot of wee stains down her back legs. Is this normal in females, she is fluffy and so I expect it is but I hadnt noticed this before. She is still licking the area, not anywhere near as much, but my main thing is she still goes (well may not as I cant tell) loads and loads in the first hour-2 hours she is up. I mean squatting at least every 5 minutes. Is this because she is holding it in? Is this normal? Behaviour wise she is such a different puppy so I think from that it obviously has treated what was making her unwell, but this constant weeing is concerning me.

Sorry for all the questions, she is so adorable I just worry over her!

Hi Cocopops123
I know how worrying pups can be, well dogs really, but especially new pups!

I don't have experience with bitches, but my advice would be to go back to the vet if you are in any way concerned, you have nothing to lose and it will give you peace of mind.  Also, a phone call to her breeder might help too, her breeder will know whether this is normal or not and should be able to advise.

Keeping everything crossed for your girl x

I would be concerned if a puppy of mine had urine stains/leaking.  Has she always had it?  Could possibly be a sign she is a wet puppy.  Keep an eye on it and if it doesn'y improve in a couple of days take her back to the vet.  Have you spoken to her breeder - I am sure she would like to know what's going on and may offer some advice.

Same as Ells-Bells, do keep an eye on it closely. Could well be cystitis but the Goldens do have wet puppy (ectopic ureter). However, I did have one litter with 3 bitches who had cystitis and yet all cleared up before they went to their new homes. I believe that they wee'd too close to the ground and their fur was soaking it back up and causing an infection. She may need another course of AB's but if this doesn't clear up then it does need investigating.

Thank you all, I bathed her yesterday and got rid of the wee and touch wood, all looks ok today and real reduction in amount she is going.  Accidents inside have also stopped so I think all is looking better - Keeping an eye on her very closely!

Sounds promising - but continue to monitor her.  Hope she stays clear of infection etc.
