justg a quick question, if you had a bitch scanned, how accurate was the number of puppies on the scan compared to the number of puppies born?

It depends entirely on the skill of the operator.  Some are experienced and very accurate, others only use the equipment 4 times a year and are pretty useless! :)

Totally inaccuarate, only rely on it to confirm a pregnancy.

the past 3 times i have used the same lady and she has been correct each time. It is like already has been said that the accuracy is on the skill of the person scanning and opitmum timing i presume.

In general, I have found most CD'ers that scan, to find vets far less accurate than sheep scanners, as they don't do it anywhere near as often.

My vet is very accurate with numbers, not spot on but only one out. But he is  a very good scanner and I always prefer to see him than the other vets in the practice.

I don't bother.  Someone who used my stud dog was told twice by an experienced scanner that she wasn't pregnant.  Two weeks after the last scan she had a normal healthy sized litter!

I use kieth o shea and for me he has never been wrong, not even with the amount the bitch has been carrying

With vets I've had one say 3 or 4, 10 were born. One said 5 or 6, 6 were born. (Unfortunately that one was a locum!) One said 1, maybe 2, then 10 were born!! Then I switched to a sheep scanner a few times, wasn't happy at all with her as she couldn't even tell when pups were dead or alive or numbers, and charged more than my new vet. My new vet scanned one of my bitches today and saw 8 pups (groan, I hoped for a smaller litter) and we know it's perfectly possible for pups to be hiding behind each other so goodness knows what we'll get.... I didn't even think the bitch was pregnant myself!
