Hi all my bitch is in the throws of whelping and has been pushing intermitantly for an hour and 15 mins, the fluid sac burst 8am (smells like puppy dog!) she isn't pushing all the time just obviously when the contraction comes but as yet nothing to be seen. The pushes do seem stronger and a bit more frequent now but just wondered how long to wait with the first pup. Book of the bitch just say a pup should be born soon after the fluid sac. She has been sick loads, just frothy bile during this time, toileted lots overnight.
this is her second litter but she had a section the last time and never got to the intense pushing side of things before we realised something was wrong.
You haven't much time really before something should happen - I would get her up and walk her round the room a little to see if that stimulates anything - otherwise it may have to be a quick call to the vet, especially given her past history.
thanks
have just been onto vet anyway to let them know whats happening and to get their advice - waiting for a call back as she's in theatre. She isn't keen to leave whelping box but has just got out to have a drink. Definately pushing more now and with a bit more oomph(sp) but nil to see.
I have known my bitches go an hour or so after sac burst before puppy.Hope everything is moving along now x good luck.
Have you checked the pups position for coming out?
spoke to vet, and have had a feel internally but cant feel a pup imediately so am going to take her over to vets for assessment. Have given her a walk in garden and some RC baby dog milk to give a boost of energy so while i'm getting ready will see if that has an affect.
my last girls water broke awhile before 1st pup came ,when a bitch starts to push and then stop their just helping pup come down ,its when their pushing for 1h none stop and nothing happening you need to get to the vets right away! hope all goes well lorripop. x

I was told by our emergency vet last week that if they are pushing for more than hr and half, and nothing happens, they definately need looking at so you've done the right thing Lorripop. Hope things start moving along quickly now.
any pups yet? hope all is well x
yep back from vets after section - 4 boys and 2 girls all survived. one of the boys was very much in breech position and holding it all up, by the time we got there, there was more of a green watery loss.
mum came round really quickly and washed them all!
much better experience with vets this time(changed from last one, mainly due to cost), really lovely vet.
thanks for your responses and help

I won't let my toy breed go over 40 minutes after sac bursts. Even with a larger breed, I have to be honest and say that one hour would be my very limit. What if there is a malpresentation? I've had them scanned in my arms after racing in, and problem found super quick.
