Hello everyone.

A cry for help from experienced breeders.

My lovely bitch was mated yesterday, she has all the relevant health tests for her breed; MRI, eye and heart and the stud dog had the same.

Here's the problem, I spent so much time getting health tests sorted, deciding if my bitch was worthy of breeding and seeking out a good stud dog that I forgot to worm her when she came into season (I am fuming with myself and feel stressed and sick!)  I phoned the vet yesterday and explained my predicament, spoke to a veterinary nurse and she said to worm her today...does that sound right, would that be safe?

I wouldn't worm a bitch that had just been mated.  She isn't going to be bothered by worms until pregnancy hormones kick in.

The only wormer licensed to use on pregnant bitches is Panacur suspension.  The bitch isn't dosed until day 40 of pregnancy, and every day after until 2 days post whelp.

Using this regime, I have never had worms in mum or pups.

Oh - and I wouldn't buy from the vet when you can buy at half the price online and get free delivery!  :-)

Ditto, just to add that the dose given is a 1/4 of the normal adult dose every day until two days post whelping. 

This should take care of 98% of the worms transfered from bitch to pups as well as worming the bitch.
