Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Protein, High v Low
- By Jeff (Moderator) Date 22.09.10 16:44 UTC
Hi All,

We are currently having a feeding debate in my breed regarding what is best......I know, I know, each to their own but many feel not enough guidance is being given to new owners so bear with me :-)
One of the main arguments is they should be fed a low protein diet, so my question fro this part is- can people cite a good quality complete food that is low in protein? Personal experience would be great but any info gratefully received.

Thanks,

Jeff.

Hi
I am a little hesitant offering advice - seem to need more myself these days but I have done a little research on Protein levels in food and for what it's worth.....
You can't directly do a comparison between protein levels in food, without calculating the protein % against volume given.  i.e. You can have a food that is say, 28% Protein and you would have to feed 300 grms a day say......then another food, with a greater protein content but the quantity is much lower.
You could find that both foods are similar on % protein intake.
Also, just to confuse matters, apparently, as we know there are different 'types' of protein and though high in certain foods, the protein source is better.
I came across this with Olijen(or is it Orijen)...they show something like 40+% protein (scared me half silly) but after speaking to them and others that use it...this amount of protein with the source they use (low/zero grain0 is better).
I actually don't think a slightly higher protein level is harmful in young, active dogs and think that colour additives etc., cause more problems with hyper-activity than a slightly higher protein level but maybe other members can say differently?

Sorry, I meant to add an extra  remark.......   obviously if there are health issues (renal etc.) involved, then the Protein levels etc. of food do become a very important issue.   I was talking normal, healthy dogs on the info I had found.

Thanks Cindy, I would agree with what you have written however my initial question regarding any brand was so I would have a starting point for an ongoing discussion in my breed re feeding. We have a number of people advocating the feeding of a low protein diet and I am looking for a food that would satisfy this requirement, but not stacked full of rubbish-if ones exists.
Thanks,

Jeff.

Hi jeff
If I had to choose a lower protein complete then it would be skinners field and trial duck and rice or salmon and rice.
The ingredients are very basic but in my opinion good.
Salmon 20% protein and duck 22%.

Whole white rice40% salmon meal 17.5%
Naked oats peas sunflower oil, whole linseed, beet pulp.
vitimins and minerals.

I have used this before and would not hesitate to use it again.

Thanks, a great starting point.
