Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / weight gain in new pups?

Hello, we have had a wonderful litter of pups (09/10). they are all putting on weight but one much less than the others. the biggest boy is just over 1 Kg but the smallest bitch is only 715g. how much weight should she be putting on? there is a mix of weights but she is over 100gs smaller than the next smallest girl who weighs  840g.
Im probably just being paranoid as she is putting on about 70g every 2 days on average but is this enough?
thank you.

That sounds plenty.  A smaller puppy can't put on as much weight as a bigger pup, but will put on the same amount as the big one did when it reaches that weight.

Puppy weights I have found can vary quite wildly from litter to litter as long as they are gaining and the rate of gain increases as they grow then things are fine and by 12 weeks I have found most pups weigh within 2 pounds of each other in my breed (which are 20 - 23kg adults).

It is always a good idea to plug in small pups onto the milk bar any time you pass the whelping box, even if you have to wake them, so they get more time suckling as they can't get as much in one got as the big ones, and always put them on the best teats, taking a fat one off a teat they have started running well.

If it's any help to have this information - I have a breed that gives birth to very many less pups than yours.

I had a litter last year that had one little girl that was a full 100gms smaller than all the others.  100gms in my breed would be far more noticeable than yours!  :-)

She had caught up by the time she left home at 12 weeks of age.  So don't worry!  :-)
