Topic Dog Boards / Health / Kennel Cough - Outbreak Autumn 2010
- By suejaw Date 21.09.10 16:01 UTC
Hi,

I've just been informed that there appears to be an outbreak in the Hampshire area of the dreaded KC. One of her friends has been to a number of shows around the country recently (CH Shows) who also stated that she heard the dreaded hacking cough from some dogs at the show :-(.

Maybe a good thread to keep others informed of any known local issues, like we had with the Parvo one.

I know of 3 dogs in Fife who have had it including one of mine also some in Angus

What idiot takes the dog to a show with KC.  Fiar enough if they come down with it there, but take it home straight away.  Some people are irrisponsible.

I have my boys done for kennel cough annually, because we often leave them with Kelly and other dogs.

I do too get them done and the eldest has been around an outbreak around here, many of the dogs who caught it had been around him, yet he never caught it.
My understanding is that it only covers a strain as the flu jab does for us, but it often helps to alleviate the symptoms if they do pick it up.
The main concern is puppies, the elderly and also the sick..

There are many schools of thought on the innoculation, but i'm personally happy giving it to mine, they have no side effects and from what i've seen it works for mine, unless I was very lucky?

Both mine have had it ...friends dog also has it at the mo..we are in Cleveland.
I honestly never thought to get them vaccinated for it when they got their boosters in july and it wasnt mentioned by the vet either:(

Be careful our vet sprays it up there nose, a locum vet injected Jake with the nose stuff, he then went on 10 days of antibiotics just in case, then had it up his nose. All free of course their mistake, some vets inject some use the nose spray!!

To be honest its not an outbreak as such because i work in a vets practice in Hampshire and we haven't really stopped seeing cases for over a year now. Its become very common place for some reason.
Whistler, the KC vaccination is a liquid squirted up the nose, i don't think there has ever been an injectable form to my knowledge?! Certainly at my practice i've only ever known them use nobivac KC and previously intrac, both nasal vaccines. The normal vaccine contains a parainfluenza part but i think that is different to KC. Neither of which conver all strains of KC anyway so it won't always prevent an infection.

Angus is very bad with K.C. jsut now. Montrose, Forfar, Kirrie. they have it bad.

Yes, it is different.  All mine get the parainfluenza with the normal boosters.  My vet uses nobivac up the nose for KC.

No he was injected and the locum said in her surgery they inject hence Jake had 10 days of antibiotics. OH took Jake I took Whis and I thought that it always went uip the nose so I would have questioned the vet, but OH didnt as its usually me that does the dogs.

I'm just north of Angus, in Stonehaven and one of mine had it earlier this month.

Whistler

So the locum injected the nasal spray?  Cripes!  No wonder they sorted him out for free...

Actually it's a good learning point for all of us - it's always worth knowing what should happen so you know what to expect.  Thankfully no harm done...

Hi
Been awhile since this thread but please can someone give me some info?
My two were with a friends dogs yesterday (in Warwickshire) and the friends dog was diagnosed with kennel cough yesterday afternoon.   All 4 dogs spend quite a lot of time walking together.
My older boy is three and a half and had a very bad case of kennel cough when he was a year old.   The puppy is just nine months old and she hasnt been too well and is on steroids at the moment and will be for the next two weeks or so.
I am wondering here whether anyone knows the incubation period of kennel cough and when Ill be able to tell when I can expect any signs and/or know that there is nothing to worry about?
Thanks very much.

Hi MM
Thanks for that.  Itll be a while till were home and dry then...
How  long then are they contagious?   My friend wants me to walk with her next weekend - but surely her boy will still be contagious next weekend?
Can they get it more than once?
Thanks again

I'm not sure...here I make sure we go 3 weeks from last infected dog BEFORE we interact with anyone again.
- By Trialist Date 08.11.10 17:00 UTC
If the dog has just been diagnosed then it should most definitely NOT be walked out and about now, next weekend, or even a few weeks after. I know that makes life hell for the owner of the infected dog, but not as much hell as it makes for us poor folk that have to deal with the consequences of some idiot walking their dog whilst infected. Kennel cough is not just a minor infection, it can be a life taker and if not that it can lead to very serious (& very expensive) health problems. I know.

Like flu, kennel cough can be caught as many times as a dog is exposed to it. Hope this helps.
