A while back I posted a link "cartoon eye", which was regarding my GSDs eye problem. After not being able to find the problem my own vet referred me to the Animal Health Referral Centre in Manchester, after minor examinations we decided to see if the eye would resolve itself. Well I have decided that this isn't going to happen know after about 4 months, so I have an appointment with Duke at 2.30pm with my own vet today to see what further treatment can be done. I just dread taking him though, he probably won't stand still long enough for them to inspect the eye proper, so I fear they will have him in tomorrow under sedation.

Just to run through the symptoms again though incase anyone has any knowledge: Slight squint, pupil has been dilated for 4 months, very red in the corner, slight clear film across corner of eye about 1/4 across, he occassionaly rubs at it, but otherwise is fine in himself. From what I remember most common disease were ruled out. This is why I have a horrid feeling that we're at the stage of scans and things, which I never wanted to put him through. But it is playing on my mind and for his sake and mine what ever it takes, hopefully between my vet and I we can help Duke, this time, once and for all. Will keep posted of any relevant info which people may find helpful as well.

If it was Pip Boydell you were referred to in Manchester then you can't get much better and I'd go back.

I'd also say that as you were referred and the problem hasn't corrected itself i'd go back to the specialist as they will have far greater knowledge than your vet.
I liken a vet to a gp, they know a lot and have a broad knowledge but unless they have done specialist training in say opthamology i'd be going back to Manchester.

Ditto the others, the specialist will have the equipment too, like a tonometer to measure pressures (thinking Glaucoma for example).

Thanks everyone for your imputs. Especially marianneB you were quite correct in presuming that it was Pip I had seen previous. My vet The Grange were in touch with pips hospital and they faxed through test result findings, and the conclusion is that they think Duke has damaged his 3rd ocular nerve. I don't know how, but may be the damage was done before I had Duke as he was a rehomer. There is no treatment available, and he should continue to be able to live with it ok, however because his pupil is dilated the sun/light will eventually harm his vision. Eye drops will be given permanently, if I wish, to help contract the pupil, making his eye less uncomfortable.
