Ahh, to be love sick.

have you tried taking him for a walk somewhere he's not used to to catch his attention?  It might help.  Have you anything he might want a buckkie or something sweet to get his appitite going.

Otherwise not too sure.  He'll only go son long without eating.  You could try brewers yeast to increase appitite, I've had success with it.

A few years ago I sent my boy to my sons when I had a bitch in season. He wouldn't eat all the time he was there so I brought him home. He was a lot happier and ate something.

Unfortunately there is no way of knowing how a dog will react in this situation. Do you have friends that have dogs that he plays with? They may help him take his mind off things.

oh yes hes with a younger bitch to play with but still not eating  and hes at home so dont know what i can do

The thing is, he doesn't know that his other friend will be coming back, so he is grieving as if she died. There isn't really all that much you can do. Is this the first time they have been separated? Or is it the first time he has been like this due to his age? Once his lady friend returns he will go back to normal (after he has made a fuss of her!) but I don't know of anything you can do for him now except try to take his mind of it. Walking does help, but it also uses up his energy and he may lose condition as a result. Sorry, but can't think of anything else to do. My boy is now 8 years old and doesn't eat fully when I have a bitch in season at home.

Alot of males go off food when a bitch is in season at home, plus with your his girl was in season now she has vanished so it will be a combination of the hormones in his body wanting to mate and his mind pining for his friend.  I have found giving an in season bitch chlorophyll tablets greatly reduces her natural odour and does make the males I have less inclined to fuss while the bitch is still in. I start it the moment I notice the blood spotting. Even  my normally "off food for 3 week" male continues eating as normal.  Of course it is NOT a contraceptive aid, it will not stop a mating, it just reduces greatly the odour given of by the bitch.

You could try offering him a different food.  If you normally feed meat and mixer just one or the other on their own, or even a new brand of kibble, try a puppy food then at least he will get the extra calories.  You may need to offer a change each meal (try 3 options in rotation), I have found that works quite well in the past.

He will probably really perk up at the show as there are sure to be bitches there in full season also!!!

thanks for suggestions still not eating so im off to vets as i rang and spoke to him and he said he could give him an injection to help with his loss of appetite and also an injection to lower his hormones but only as long as he,s not going to be used for stud within the next 6 weeks  (which he most definatley will not)
Also the chlorophyll tablets you suggested where do i get them from ( for next time) as i will mate her next time) is that the brand name of them?

You can get Anti-Mate tablets in pet shops; they're made by Sherleys and Bob Martins.

If you are mating her next season then you will NOT want to use chlorophyll tablets except for only the very early days of her cycle.

ok thanks dont need them  when she,s first in season but when she gets to about 6/7 days  from when i first notice colour dogs start creating then and i do want to mate her next time so wont need anything for her but will have to send her to my daughters and will probably have same problem with my dog who i hope to mate her to

If you are going to use your own dog then why are you thinking of sending your girl away? Just curious, not being nasty ;-) I have found that having my male in the house at the time my bitch was in season was actually far easier than sending him away. The only problem I have now is that he thinks he is going to be allowed to mate her every season. Not much fun when she comes in every 19 weeks

well its the bitch i send away only round the corner to my daughters so not to bad but with having 2 males in the house (not kenneled) i find it easier and not so stressfull but do have this problem with the young dog as well as his hormones going to pot he pines for his best friend

Ah, didn't realise you had 2 males. I think I would send the girl away too. One dog singing and whining is bad enough, but 2?!?!?!?!
