Hi, would this stand up to doggy digging?
- By Honeymoonbeam [es] Date 15.09.10 19:14 UTC
I think Karndean is what my daughter is planning on having downstairs in her house.  According to her, it´s the in thing now.

I had cork tiles in a kitchen once.  The dogs were crated but still managed to reach out and dig into the cork.  completely ruined the floor.

I have the Kardean hand finnished wood effect down in the hall. It's been down a year and i have 2 large dogs and live across the road from the beach and the floor still looks like new .

tile defiantly, and  tip use water resistant sealer roud the edging! If you dont take the grout right into the wall it will get under neath so use sealer around the edge of the tiles to stop antyhing going under it.

I had laminate flooring and thought becuse it was watr resistant it would be fine, but when I got my fist 2 dogs from the pound it wasnt the case with no suprise the dogs wenr house trained and weed everywhere the first month and had accidents for about the first year of being with me! I needed to rip the flooring up because the urine was getting under the floor and I gtta say it stank! I was, well I thought I was, mopping and disenfecting the area effectivly but after about 3 months when I was using my heating it because apparent the urine was under the flooring!

Well have discounted cork now. Have looked at Kaldean and Dalsouple and find they are way out of my price range but was chatting to a nurse at my doc's surgery (she has five dogs) and she has found a similar product to the above but much cheaper. Will be investigating that this weekend. Still doesnt solve the problem of wee getting down the sides though, although I would think rubber would be less of a problem to clean than vynil. Still worried about tiles as far a slipping (me, really) but still weighing up all the options.

Rather than tiles what about stone floors?

Or how about this - http://www.amtico.com/   Would love this myself. There are cheaper versions of it.

Have you thought about kennel flooring, as in the paint that the good ones use?
- By annieg3 [gb] Date 18.09.10 15:45 UTC
Yes have heard about the amtico from my surgery nurse. It was the cheaper version I was looking for today. The guy in the shop was determined to sell me a really thick vynil which he said they sealed at the edges. He said it would stand any wear, doggy or human. Its a family run firm who tend not to blag people so trust him but still undecided.
Wondered what you meant about the kennel floor? Did you mean some special paint?

karndean flooring
Completely agree.  I've got black riven tiles in my kitchen but Karndean all through the rest of the downstairs and for me it's the perfect flooring!

I dont want to bore everyone to tears with this topic but I suppose it is important for us doggy people to have the right flooring  and for newbies to check different ones out, so will go on a bit longer.

Having a rethink about Karndean now as found a supplier with some of this product in my price range. Am wondering, though, if the ones at the lower end of the price scale are good enough for doggy needs.? It does say that quality is better at the high end. Can you remember which Karndean you chose? I see all the different types have names.

I've got Knight Tile pitched pine.  One of the cheapest and absolutely brilliant.  It's been down for 3 years, has had heavy wear during that time and is as good as the day it went down.
It wasn't as cheap as cheap carpet.  Probably a simiar price to a good quality carpet, but I wouldn't swap it for the world.  I have a large rug in front of the fire but apart from that, it's au naturelle thoughout.  I don't find it cold and if I could turn the clock back, then I would have it in the bedrooms too! :)

Am getting excited now as think I  can afford it now.! Seem totally obsessed with doggy digging but would this stand a bit of that do you think? Do they seal the joins and edges so any accident cant get underneath??
- By WestCoast Date 19.09.10 13:52 UTC
It's very labour intensive.  They lay 2 layers of thin board with insulation - each piece not overlapping the other.  Then they lay (glue) each piece individually.  Mine is only sealed around the edges but this is precision stuff and fits perfectly.  I'm a good DIYer but I wouldn't attempt laying this and would only use a registered fitter so that you could shout if you did get a problem but mine had been fine.  Piddling puppies, piddling geriatrics visiting, visiting adolescent male cocking his leg!!

errr, that was what I was going to write, even about putting it in the bedrooms :) .  I've got the same one as westcoast and love it.  It is the lowest price range and I don't use any of the specialist products on it.  From memory it was about £40sqm fitted although you can buy it off ebay for cheaper and get someone local to you to do it.

I got carpets put upstairs at the same time as the Karndean downstairs and it has cost lots to keep getting the carpets shampooed etc and they still look grubby from the dog taking bones up there etc

I have concrete floors underneath and it isn't cold even with that.  I don't have any boards under mine as it is on concrete but a screed (?) was put on it before laying it.  Just to echo westcoast again, it is amazing.

I had my rott boys puppy pen in the kitchen and it was constantly flooded with pee, poo and puke while he was a young 'un and you wouldn't be able to tell which bit of the kitchen the pen was in.  The only downside I have found is that I got a bit too complacent with how good it is and threw some frozen lamb bones onto it to break them apart instead of doing it on the concrete outside and I have dented a strip but it is only noticeable to me.  If I got my act into gear I would get someone in to replace that strip.
