Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Possible umbilica hernia

My girl gave birth Sunday. However im concerned about the one pup. The vet gave them a basic check over the next evening said he was happy with them they appeared healthy but im concerned that my one pup has an umbilica hernia.

they will be a week old tomorrow and the little one has a more prenounced lump on the pups belly than the others, I dont know if this is inherited or if it is due to my bitch and will heal up, as she completely ripped the cord off and it took a while to stop the bleeding.

Can anyone give me some information? its more of a solid lumpand cant be pushed in, is this just the healing process?

at this age they can appear a little 'bumpy' and it is probably just the scar tissue from the healing.

I have thought a couple of times that a puppy has had a bit of a bump, but as yet have never had a hernia and it has always been just healing so hopefully thats the case for you.

Congrats on your babies :)

Been there!  One of my girls was over enthusiastic, and it took ages to stop the bleeding.  In all my years with dogs, I had never had a pup with a hernia.  Nothing really showed until the pup had grown (it was a small terrier breed), but by 8 weeks it was a definite hernia, where mum had made a bit of a hole.

I know many people would say just leave it, as they sometimes right themselves.  But I wasn't prepared to let a puppy go, and the new owners not notice if it needed attention.  The pup had alreday been chosen, so I did give the people chance to change their minds.  They still wanted him, so I said that I would pay for the operation, and get my own vet to operate.  I kept him until his post op check, which was fine.  And I am not worrying about any "what ifs".
