Hi all
whilst out this morning Murph has somehow ripped the dewclaw from one of his front paws ,I didn't see it happen and it's not bothering him .
It's a clean hole ,and it's stopped bleeding -Is this a trip to the vet ? or just keep it clean and let it heal ??
It was very frosty this morning so theres no mud or anything
what do you think ??
thanks

Min has done it before and I just made sure it was kept clean and dry and she didn't suffer any ill effects.

Keep an eye on it and if it seems to be getting infected then a trip to the vets might be wise !

TH does this all the time - mostly playing football. We always take her to the vet for an anti-biotic injection, but as long as you have flushed it out with sterile water, stopped the bleeding and it's started to clot/scab over, then you should be OK.

But I agree. Watch it and if it starts to get infected, whip him to the vet.

Poor Murph! It really is the time of year for injuries isn't it! How's he doing now?

He's fine now thanks :) It was a clean pull ( like a tooth ) and it hasn't bothered him --he's licking it a bit more today though so I'll just keep an eye on it :)
Your anecdote made me laugh -I know what you mean about the way they spin :D
hope your hugo's foot is better :)

They're like crazy spining tops when they get going!! I saw a chap down in Salisbury the other day, walking no less than FIVE dobermanns at the same time - and they were all doing it!! I was on the floor with mirth!

Well, good luck with Murph's paw, apparently their saliva has anasthetic in it so all the licking can't be a bad thing. Hugo's 'hole' in his paw is now half the size it was, it's lead walking only still, but he doesn't seem to mind.

I've asked my farrier to fit Hugo with some metal horse shoes. The poor bloke thinks I'm mad anyway, he just gave me one of those "don't be such a stupid woman" looks and walked off!

Merry Christmas!

Ok some of you may say cruel nasty and it must heart but before you do I have used this for last 15 years on horses and dogs in fact many time applied to large wire cuts while standing near back legs of horses and never heard a dog cry yet when applied, also if you look at bottle can be used as mouth wash when diluted ok get that in first.
This is the main part of my first aid kit for my doggies hydrogen peroxide 30ml liquid and not cream sounds painful yes but isn’t and yes I have used on cuts myself applied undiluted onto wound really good for puncher wounds this will burn out any infection in the wound and helps to dry wound if used each day.
Have talked to vet about using this and was told it is used by a lot of farm vets on the larger farm animals were cuts are infected easy.

My GP also used Hydrogen Peroxide on me when I got in the way of a dogs tooth one day and it sliced my finger to the bone - it seems to "bubble" any foreign bodies out but will kill some of the surrounding skin if you are not careful. Works well on those chin spots!

How is Murphy's foot now Liz?

Morning !
It's fine now thanks :)
we left it and it's dried up nicely -like I said it was a clean pull ,I've no idea how he did it .
But it's made me wonder about getting the other one removed -would he have to have an anesthetic or would the vet just pull it out with a local ???? or should I just leave well alone ?
Liz :)

He'd need an anasthetic, my Braid had front and back dewclaws and never had any probs, none of my dogs ever have-touch wood. Braid went everywhere flat out so I would leave well alone. Glad it's ok

Hi liz, my Bonnie (my old staffy) did the same thing. I took her to the vets , the nail was hanging on by a whisper and really bleeding, the vet gave a little twist and gave me some antibiotics and that was that! Except for the 'that will be one million pounds please!' bit :D it grew back and was fine. with Decoy (springer) he had his back dews left on, he wasn't docked either - I had so much trouble with the hind dews that when I had him neutered I booked him in to have them removed at the same time. The vet told me that they didn't remove the dew 'toe' because if infection set in , it could track up the bone and cause big probs in the leg, so he removed the whole claw and claw bed etc, so it would never grow back, he has little boney bits of the toe left, you can't see them cause of his miniscule feathering , but you can still feel the 'toe', he had three stitches on each side, but healed really quickly - he has had no probs at all :). with Bonnie's it was the front dew, and she never had any problem with it again, it was a one off! with the front removal I would worry if they were wanting to do a complete removal including the bone for the same reasons my vet said about Decoy's hind ones, so if it is a constant problem you may have to consider the same op , just the removal of the claw and growing gear as it were! You do know it will grow back don't you? I just reread and noticed you said about getting the other one removed? Julie:)

Well just shows how thick I am -I didn't know they grew back
He had back ones removed as a pup and the little toe thingy is still there
So I'll just have to wait and see if this one grows back -unless he pulled out the growie bit as well
I can see that you're all impressed by my technical terminology :D I hope i havn't confused anyone ......other than myself ;) :D

Hi Liz

Did Murphy have back dew claws? They do occur in Dobermanns but are very uncommon - seems strange that his breeder removed his tail but not claws - I do it the other way around as my first bitch had many problems with the remains of her dewclaws and was always catching them. They had not been removed properly and still had "bits" there.

Keep the dew claw very well trimmed back so it is as short as possible.

Hiya Christine,
she said they had had tails and claws done ( I must admit that I thought that meant front dew claws and when I saw them still there I just thought it must have been me that got confused )So now I am wondering !
oh well you live and learn :)
and a Merry Christmas to you ( the snow effect is very good ;) )

Braid was going to have his done when he was neutered but as I lost Cass and Una was already spayed he never was neutered

Hi all - my vet does the dew claw op, removing the nail and growing tackle only, on older dogs that have not had them removed as pups. If the litter is having the dew claws removed as 'teeny tinys' then he does the whole bit (if that makes sense). My cocker was dewed and docked, but the Springer hadn't either done, at the time the breeder said she didn't want her 'babies' touched but on hindsight I think they just didn't bother! the tail has caused no probs, but the dews were always getting snagged and caught, even though they were trimmed :( Incidentally, at one of the clubs I attend there was a Rottie pup there with a big bunch of dew claws on one hind leg, there were four claws in a 'grape like' bunch? does this occur much? Julie:)
