Topic Dog Boards / Health / Doberman - Arthritis - Meds how much?

Hi,

My beautiful 8 yr old Dobie has an arthritic knee, and whilst it doesnt seem to concern her when she is chasing crows, or playing with a tennis ball she often limps after exercise and when getting on to her bed.
She has seen the vet quite a few times and as a result she is on Metacam (helps a little - but doesn't cure the problem), she is also on Naturediet to get her weight down to 35Kg (currently 40Kg) and I will need to limit her off lead exercise.

I want to up her dosage of Glucosamine from one a day (500mg) to more, I also want to add chondroitin, Green lipped mussel extract and vit c (help absorb the glucosamine) to her diet.

Could anybody please advise me on quantities of each per day as they vary dramatically from one supplier to the next.

Many thanks

I had my Golden with severe HD (40 kgs of weight) on 2 capsules a day of Hi Strength Glucosamine with Chondroitin (human version) from Vitamins Direct and once on this he didn't need any meds from the vet, lived until 13. He had a hip score of 96 and at one point couldn't use his hindlegs at all. My vet said you can't overdose on G&C.

To be honest I'm not sure if Nature Diet would lose her any weight -it always puts weight ON my dogs.

My large breed dog who weighs 71kg has arthritis in her knee after having an op on her cruciate ligament. She spent a long time with on lead exercise and put on a lot of weight and I found metacam was just not working for her although I used on previous dog and was good. Vet put her on dolagis and I gave them to her 3 hrs before exercise and she was fine even after off lead exercise. However, my vet thought she would be on them all her life but I have been giving her Riaflex (contains glucosamine, chrondroitin and msm), 2 green mussel tablets bought from holland and barrett and cod liver oil daily and now she only needs her dolagis when she has had a really long off lead walk and she looks like she is in a bit of discomfort. She very rarely needs them now but my vet said keep them handy because its like us taking ibruofen.
