Morning Forum and a while since posted.  Perhaps some words of wisdom from any of you may be of help regarding temperature pre whelping.

Bitch is on Day 63 or first mating but also mated over 5 days and so could be Day 62, 61, 59, 58 LOL - I have the stud dog who decided on a day off and I allow them to mate when they want to not when I want them too!

Have taken temperature last week and she has a low reading on most checks at 36.8 or 36.9 but this must be her true pre whelping temperature so I have to look for a drop from that as was the case with her previous litter (whelped on day 62 5 pups no problems) Yesterday 0800 recorded 36.0 so perhaps it had dropped in the night who knows. Today she has a temp of 37.8 and I have read on this forum that it can go up just before whelping - is that correct?  Went to vets yesterday for a check up as I am worried a larger than average litter and she was rolling her eyes alot yesterday and day before and wanted some piece of mind, all well and pups were dancing on the table for the vet, quick internal showed no blockage and vet reckoned should be soon - I could have told her that LOL but not to worry.

This morning not ate breakfast but last two days she has decided to eat late at about 1pm so we will see if she does same.

Poo this morning normal and just now another poo but this time dioarrea so perhaps things could be happening

In summary, is temp rise usual in association with loose toilet and what is your experience of this! I do hope today as the wait is agony LOL but it is my third ever litter so I should konw better.

Thanks

How exciting.  I wouldn't leave her, from all forum advice it could happen today, she might be day 63 or very close.  i think the temp could be low enough to suggest somethings happening.  The runs sound like they're starting.  Wouldn't it be nice to actually hear of a morning birth and not up all night.

Keep us posted but don't leave her for even a minute.

Happy whelping.

With my bitch, the only temperature I took was 36.5 and that was on day 61. She had them on day 62. We only had one mating. With her, both litters, she's spent 24 hrs almost panting constantly. I recognised it from her first litter and knew that the first stages had started. My bitch also had very bulging eyes towards the end of the pregnancy, due to the pressure from the puppies inside. I could see the whites of her eyes if she looked around.

As for the diahorrea, most probably her emptying out her system before the big event.

Good luck, fingers crossed it'll be soon.

Well an update will not only reassure me but also other readers if ever going throught the same long wait!

She had messy poo this morning at about 0800 hrs, has not eaten but noticed poss a mouthful gone then notices wet patch (not urine) on sofa with a few morsals of puppy food so I am guessing she has been sick and water at that! Hasten to add sofa cover now in washing machine and little lady is as been all day snoring on the other dry sofa! Puppies moving but she looks smaller in tum so assuming this is normal!

I do hope she whelps today as the wait is killing me never mind what she feels like

Update to follow but lets have fingers crossed for a daylight whelp!
- By taggabags [gb] Date 10.09.10 11:55 UTC
I have not left her for 5 days!!!! Hence the impatience as the sofa is three inches too short for full leg stretch!!!!
- By sunshine [gb] Date 10.09.10 12:20 UTC
I bet you're going stir crazy.  All that time waiting is a killer.  I wonder if the sleeping the getting ready whilst pups move down (see I'm practicing).  Hope she comes soon for you and you she has them them before bedtime.  I'm sure they wait on purpose for bedtime as pennence for getting them in that mess lol.

Maybe get some rest (if possible) incase its a long one.
- By Onderka [gb] Date 10.09.10 18:30 UTC
Oooo how exciting, keep us posted.  I have mated my bitch for the second time and the wait for the confirmation scan is killing me. God knows how i'll be when it's confirmed and i have to wait for labour.  We tried mating in Feb during her last season and it didn't work so waiting for her next season seemed to be so long.  I'm actually wishing my life away LOL
- By sunshine [gb] Date 11.09.10 07:08 UTC
Same here.  I couldn't put it any better.

Any news on your pups.  I'm wondering with more updates if they've been coming.  Hope its all going smoothly.
- By taggabags [gb] Date 11.09.10 10:24 UTC
Hi all and sorry no news! She is sleeping as she has done last few days and eating and pups active so reckon it is just not time yet. With her selection of dates i.e she is either day 64, 62, 61, 60 or 58 today I am guessing it will just have to be a wait and see.

Shall keep you posted as stage one was not very long at all last time so opening for the same again and TODAY please.

Thanks guys

A normal ish day, a bit of bed racking this afternoon but all for a couple of minutes! She has increased the discharge with more stringy type coming now but not loads just seen a string after she urinated outside and is looking at her rear a bit more but no panting yet??? Just eaten her tea and had a good drink.  Really hope things get going tonight!
- By Onderka [gb] Date 11.09.10 19:05 UTC
how sad am i, i keep refreshing this page waiting for news.  It's better than waiting for a baby to arrive.  LOL, what breed do you have and how many pups?
- By taggabags [gb] Date 12.09.10 10:22 UTC
Update is that nothing has happened!  She has had a minimal loss of discharge over the past few days, temperature fine and stools ok since Thursday.  Last night she panted just twice LOL and raked up her bed twice also just to ensure i had to set the alarm for every hour then she slept through the night!

She is now asleep as normal, has not eaten but has taken to having breakfast mid day so will see if she eats, toilet ok and puppies are having a party in their with their moving!

I will take her to the vets for another check up in the morning considering today she is either Day 65, 63, 62, 61 or 59!!!!

I am aware of inertia but think she has done done enough to show there are problems and is ok in her self but would welcome any ideas if anybody has any advice.  She is not a maiden bitch and whelped no probs last time so unless totally full with pups assuming not an ideal candidate for inertia!

Comments welcome and will ensure you are updated when any action.

Thanks all

I've been checking in to see if you have any news as well!  :-)

I know we take them to the vet sometimes when they really don't need it.  If it's any consolation, one of mine made a fool of me when I did the panic visit to the vet.

She had a mucky bum for 3 days, and was fed up of having her bum shampoo'd.  I expect them to clear out first, but usually find that it's within 24 hours of starting labour.

After 3 days of it, I just thought that something wasn't right, and raced to the vet hospital for a scan.  I placed her on the table for the vet, and, as the vet lifted her tail, the first water sac was showing.  We didn't need the scan, and they gave me a room to deliver my puppies in!

So,,,,  Good Luck!  :-)

Everything that is happening is 100% normal. Nothing out the ordinary.

I would however continue to take her temperature regularly 3 times a day so you are forewarned of any trouble.
- By sunshine [gb] Date 13.09.10 08:05 UTC
it killed me not checking yesterday to see if you had pups.  So glad I've not missed it.

I wondered about inertia but as you say all is going well and whelped ok before.  I suppose if Inertia a lot other syptoms/distress for mum (the dog that is).  Can they have false or practice labour beforehand, the clearing out the other day, or can that be down to the pups getting in formation to grace us with their presence?

Fingers crossed for you it happens soon.  I know it can be anytime from any of the given dates.
- By taggabags [gb] Date 13.09.10 10:57 UTC
Hi all

Well another uneventful night she slept I didn't

However today hopefully more productive. She has been all round the house, under every bed then an hour behind the sofa.  She has got comfy on the sofa now and has had a few shakes since abour 9 am so I am hopeing this is the start and today is the day,

Keep you posted.
- By Onderka [gb] Date 13.09.10 11:44 UTC
You should try and get some rest yourself before it all kicks off. Good luck, we'll  be watching for updates. x x x
- By sunshine [gb] Date 13.09.10 11:58 UTC
Sounds like somethings happening.  I'd get a blanket on the sofa just incase that's where she wants to whelp.  Onderka's right, its worse than waiting for a baby to arrive and more exciting lol.
- By taggabags [gb] Date 13.09.10 13:35 UTC
Blanket is firmly on the sofa! Trembling lot more now on and off about every 30 minutes or so and had a second more loose toilet just now and a wee now sleeping with the shakes and twitches and pups active, reckon one has just done a forward roll

fingers crossed by tonight we will have a litter, hope so for both her and my sanity.

Keep you posted for sure.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 13.09.10 13:41 UTC

- By taggabags [gb] Date 16.09.10 08:08 UTC
Morning all and apologies for not posting sooner.  We had her in first stage all day Monday from around 10.00 am so a sleepless night for me.  She kind of stopped all around midnight monday then started with shaking and bed raking up around 2am and then at 3.30 I noticed the water sac so thought we are on the way but still no contractions were obvious. Water sac burst and still nothing so at 4.30 made call to vets and took her in.  Oxi was given at 4.45 and at 5.10 first girl pup, 5.40 second girl pup then vet advised to take her home to deliver the rest.  At home around 6.15 sac appeared but could not see or feel a pup with it and she had no contractions so after 15 mins phoned vets and went back with her.  She was not contracting and the bag went back in a bit so it was decided for a C section after an xray for any remaining pups.

Section went well with two further pups, both boys delivered safely at about 9.00 am and she was up an about within the hour feeding them in the vets. Collected the family at 11.00 and home since with no problems and she is doing really great with pups all good size and thriving.

Not sure why she never got going, could be the size of the pups and one of the boys was definately breech and they were a good size so perhaps that with exhaustion from a 20 hour first stage caused her not to contract but all is now well and we are delighted with a nice litter and a healthy positively glowing bitch.

Thanks all for support and although on Tuesday I vowed never again, when you see them all doing so well and mum very happy you forget how bad it all seemed.

My word of advice is that if you have any doubt of problems then call the vet as I did, two emergency calls and a C section but was worth it and absolutely impressed with the vets who compared to some horror stories of charges for emergency sections are really reasonable as the whole event, oxi, xrays, c section, pain relief and antinflamatory jabs all come in at under £500 although I would have gladly paid millions.

Best wishes

Oh fab, congratulations.  I think we were all starting to worry when we hadn't heard from you.  Sounds like you had a right time of it, but all was well in the end.  Now you can relax a bit and enjoy your new brood. Keep us up to date on the mum and pups and PM or e-mail me a picture, would love to see them. onderka@sky.com

All the best
Leanne

My only problems with non productive labour have both times been with bitches on their third and last litters, both times smaller litters than previously but a good enough number.

The first the labour just didn't progress after over 24 hours of panting and bed making, with the second first pup born very quickly and then everything stopped and bitch got very distressed, Oxtytocin failed to move things on so C section performed.

In my breed I would never leave the bitch this long past day 63 from first mating, but then ours nearly always go a couple of days before due date.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 16.09.10 09:57 UTC
so glad to hear all is well now ,massive congratulations!!!:) x
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 16.09.10 11:23 UTC
great price from the vets - although cost doesn't come into it when you're in the thick of everything it is a relief when you feel you haven't beeen stung by out of hours service.
congrats
- By sunshine [gb] Date 16.09.10 11:59 UTC
Congrats.  Thought something might be wrong or you were shattered.

Hope you can get some sleep now and mum is doing well.  I'm sure the progress to the next stage will be smoother.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 16.09.10 19:37 UTC
Phew, I'm glad all went well if somewhat expensively!
- By JeanSW Date 16.09.10 21:27 UTC

Expensive???

Having paid £1,086 for a section, I don't understand the comment!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 17.09.10 08:50 UTC
Well ok, Ellie's was £620 plus the cost of pre mate testing to get her in whelp to begin with. But it was expensive for the OP compared to a natural birth!

>> Expensive???
