Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Raw feeding pup and supplements
- By peaches1 [gb] Date 10.09.10 15:32 UTC
Hi Everyone,

My 15 week old GR pup is being fed raw, due to the fact she point blank refused to eat complete! So she has been raw fed for the last 3 weeks and is now an enthusiastic and eager eater! My only problem is that she won't eat any mushed up veg of any description. She is having a good range of meats and bones, offal, eggs, goats milk, honey etc. Do i need to give her any supplements to substitute the lack of veg? Obviously i want to make sure she is having everything she needs as she is hopefully going to be shown.

Any advice appreciated as we are new to this.

You could try her with Dorwest's "Easy Greens or Keepers Mix" (http://www.dorwest.com/Top/General-Health) or Hilton Herbs "Vital Daily Health" (http://www.hiltonherbs.com/products/vital-daily-health/217).

Many raw feeders don't feed any veg at all. If she's eating green tripe she'll be getting some "herbage" through that, so I wouldn't worry too much about feeding fruit/veg if she really dislikes it. Will she eat it cooked?

When I first started feeding raw I did feed fruit/veg but as time has gone on I rarely do now. My lot do get a bit of complete added to their raw and will eat anything.

Hi Pedlee,

No she wont eat it cooked either. She will eat fruit if i give it as a treat to her and the other dogs so thats not much of a problem. I looked at the Dorwest Herbs keepers mix but as its a powder she would just turn her nose up at the food if i sprinkled it over. A tablet would be much better for her.
Yes she will happily eat green tripe so guess thats helping a bit.

Thanks

Hi Mel

You could always try "Superdog Ultimate Nutrition" which does come in tablet form (http://www.holisticvet.co.uk/products.html#1) although I've never used it with my dogs.

She must be super-fussy, not very Goldie-like! In my experience they eat anything and everything!

You may just need to persevere through the fussy stages.  Like children it can take a while for tastes to adapt but being a GR I doubt she'll stay fussy for long (if you don't allow it!)

Mine are raw fed, with the odd bowl of kibble here and there because they like it and it's convenient if I forget to defrost but I rarely feed veg.  However they do get more in the winter simply because we eat more root vegetables then.  I give them clean peelings or sad and lost veg from the bottom of the fridge, or special offer vegetables.  I just blitz it in the food processor and if it's too much for one meal I freeze it in small portions.  When it's combined with mince it's hard for a dog to pick it out although mine love veg anyway.  They'll often eat a whole carrot for fun but to ensure they get the benefit, veg does need to be be pulped or steamed before feeding.

I've given Keepers Mix in the past and it's fine, but quite strong, and took the dogs a while to get used to it.  Mixed Vegetable tablets from Dorwest Herbs are easy and both dogs just eat these in their food without too much bother.

A handy tip with veg is that if you pulp it in the food processor AFTER doing the same with liver it helps to clean the machine of gunge.  Mine won't eat liver any other way so I do this in bulk and freeze it in silicone muffin trays. :)

No, not very goldie like at all. Shes the only one of my 7 that is like it, and my lot have NEVER EVER refused any food! I'm definately not used to this behaviour!! Hopefully it won't last and when she is on to 1 meal a day with the other adults she may not be quite so picky. But for now shes a growing pup so i will do whatever i need to to make sure she gets what she needs. I will always keep her raw fed, i plan to anyway as i can defintely see why they like it so much more than a bowl of dried food.
I will check out the veg tablets and the others mentioned in the above post!
Thank you all.

If you are going down the raw meaty bones route nothing else is needed just a good range of muscle bone and offal. ( that is the route I choose) If you prefer barf I would try cooking the veg a bit to start with and see how she goes.
I will pm you a wbsite for further info on raw meaty bones
