I have a litter of 3 week old puppies. From day one I have been concerned about the smallest pup in the litter and have had to suppliment her as she became dehydrated. One week ago today I rushed her to the vets as she was had green snot coming down her nose. The vet gave her antibiotic injection and liquid antibiotics to use at home. She feeds off her mum but the others push her out the way and she becomes dehydrated so I top her up. She feeds well but soon after a feed she starts sneezing what looks like milk down her nose but it smells like sick! I have reduced the amount I feed her but this make no difference at all. The dam is panting allot and I trust her that she knows all is not well. I will take the pup back to the vet tomorrow but has anyone has experienced this or could offer any advice please.
The vet said her chest was clear and breathing was fine and hoped it was an UR infection. All the other puppies are large and thriving.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this post :-)

Hi

Sorry to hear you're having problems with this little pup.

We have 3 week old puppies here too, so I know how worrying it it when there's one not doing too well.

With our smaller pups (we had 2 smaller than the rest), I would always wait until the milk was flowing (a few minutes after they have started suckling) then pull the of the bigger ones off and put the little one on. You have to hold back the others from barging the little one off the teat - I did this by putting my hands either side. I know you can't necessarily do this for every feed but I know this helped the little ones get their fair share of milk and are now doing really well. I always think mum's milk is best if at all possible.

Are you weaning them yet? This will also give this little one a better chance as there will be more mum's milk to go around.

As for the liquid being brought up, I would imagine that it's probably just some milk coming back up after drinking too quickly. Are you using a bottle or syringing? I was advised a few days ago by knowledgeable people on here that the pups should be able to lap now, so your little ones should be able to lap some milk from a dish. I'd probably rather do this and let this little one have individual time on mum rather than supplement her.

Good luck, I hope all will be well in the end.

Presume the vet has checked for cleft palate?

No sign of Cleft palate, it's the first thing I thought of.

Have you got them eating yet.  Thsi is when any smallewr puppies really start to catch up.

I start mine at about 18 days if gaining well, when eyes open if nto gaining as well.

She is being bottle fed twice daily. I started them on solids today but she has little appitite for food unless it's milk. I am meant to be worming today but I am concerned about worming a sick puppy.

They have only just begun to walk/wobble around, but she is lively enough. Still sick down her nose after feeds.

How is the pup doing?

I would still watch for CP, we had a pup with all the signs you've mentioned and it wasn't until he reached 6 weeks that the CP was found, it was a small 'v' shaped slot at the back on his throat on the soft palate.  He was checked over by 5 vets in total, had numerous courses of AB's, it was actually us that found it and not our vet.

Thankfully he did survive and is still going strong now, but he did have the CP repaired after suffering lots of infections and the last straw was when he had a massive nasal haemorrhage.
