Hi Guys

I have a 12 week old puppy that has the taste of eating her own and my 2 other dogs poos.  She has just had her second jag and is now aloud out and my concern is that she may eat strange dogs poo and i dont want her to catch anything.  Is there anything i can give her that may prevent this issue from continuing.

It is totally freakin me out making me feel sick when i have to clean it from her gums and teeth etc.

There are many reasons dogs eat poo ie stress, bordom, lack of something in their diet and it seems to be quite common. i would try keeping your garden very clean of any dog mess, try and distract your dog as soon as it's done a poo with nice treats and then clean up. also teaching your dog the 'leave it' command can help and then lots of food rewards for doing so. this can be a tricky thing to stop i'm affraid but but your may just stop over time on it's own.
You could also feed your dog certain things that make it's poo less apertizing but i think the 'leave it' command is the best one to learn.

You just need to be vigilent in removing other dog's pooh and you should be able to stop your pup eating pooh while you are out as you will be with her all the time. If it gets to the stage when you have cleared all the other pooh, but she is still eating her own, try a little pineapple in her food. this will make the food taste unpleasant, and hopefully put her off.

Maybe I should try that with mine - Ellie is being a vigilant mum and still cleaning up after Hetty, which is getting a bit annoying now she is 11 weeks old, and I've also noticed Hetty having little nibbles at it, probably thinking that's what you do because her mum does! Never had a problem with own poo eating before, though George scavenges on the walks from the blasted idiots that don't pick up!

Two of my puppies have had this habit but never tried to eat poo belonging to other dogs. They would eat cow and deer poo though. All I could do at home was pick up the poo instantly before puppy could whip round and tuck in! It can be off putting for puppy though to hover over them whilst they are toileting...just try to keep the surrounding area clear. Most puppies grow out of it eventually.

It seems to be one of the things that pups learn from the dam and you do seem to have to make a determined effort to stop it, best way is to get there first.

I have been told by my vet that there is no reason for a dog to eat poo, lots of theories but not supposed to be linked to stress/diet etc.  I have a lab that eats poo pretty much because she's greedy.
I was told by a behaviourist that a puppy eats poo if a human picks up the poo too quickly after it's done, they're trying to clean up after themselves (not sure whether to believe that or not!)
the only thing that I found that has worked for my lab is feeding all the dogs courgettes, apparently tastey on the way in, very bitter in faeces ;-)  Sadly this led to the labs destroying my runner beans, butternut squash & courgette crop because they got a taste for all thing vegetable :-(
