Topic Dog Boards / Health / Constipated 5 month pup - suggestions for clearing?!
- By Trialist Date 13.09.10 12:25 UTC
Hi, asking this for a friend of a friend!

The friend of a friend has got a 5 month Chinese Crested Powderpuff, only had him 2 months, got from a rescue centre. He was on AG Puppy/Junior in rescue and is still being fed that. He's been constipated since they got him, in that he's only toiletting once every 2 days. Any suggestions? I was asked if I thought it the food as I feed AG, but I've certainly never experienced this problem with AG food, I can't see why it would be the food.

He's apparently very settled in his new home, and is a good and happy puppy. He's not getting any treats other than AG and JWB dog biscuits. She's spoken with someone at the rescue centre to see if they had any suggestions but they didn't. She has taken him to the vet, but they've not recommended any treatment or come up with any useful suggestions.

Anyone got any helpful thoughts? Thank you.

Is the pup straining to go? If not I would not worry about it as it could be that is all, at the moment, the pup needs to go.

Your friend could try giving some milk this will often loosen the stools but we do not know if they are very hard, if they are hard then give milk if not the do nothing.

What about giving a little bit of J.W.B.wet pouch food mixed with the dry food-it may help.

Apparently he is straining and the stools are quite hard - to the point of getting stuck half way out! Sorry.

Will suggest milk and wet pouches.

Nova - with the milk are you suggesting cows or goats? I only give my gang goats milk as I know cow's milk makes them very loose!

Yes, meant cows, use as a laxative - start with half a cup - it may or may not make the pup's stools softer and will do not harm.

Thanks, I'll pass that on.

When my puppies have had a similar problem, I have given them a small piece of ripe banana, or natural yoghurt with grated apple in. Usually works and if puppy has a reasonable appetite then it will be eaten in a flash.
