Just wondering if anyone tried the new Wysong Epigen http://www.wysongepigen.net/  I am currently feeding this food to my ferrets which do require a high protien and I also have them on the Archetypal-2 so I just mix the 2 together.  They do give a free sample so I thought I'd try the other 2 as treats for my ferrets http://www.wysong.net/products/promo_samples.php

I have fed my dogs the Wysong food- not something I buy to often more so as a treat since it does have dehydrated chunks in it and my dogs just love it.

I have also read high protien isn't the best for dogs- well to much isn't good- then others i read is good- so really not sure

Thought are apprecaited :-)

Wow - over 60% protein!

It's not a food I am at all familiar with. I think they key is about how the proteins are made up i.e are they high quality proteins such as meats. Now, this is based on my limited understanding...not on any expert opinion....

I think there used to be the school of thought that said a high protein diet was bad for a dog (kidneys etc). However, from what I understand now, there is no link between high protein and kidney failure. For example, my dog who is in renal failure, can have a meal made from beef (high protein) but wouldn't be able to eat a low quality dog food of around 20% protein (often poor quality proteins). The body finds it difficult to break down these poorer quality proteins and can be a burden on the kidneys. I can also feed him eggs which are packed full of protein (although very high quality so therefore no issues for his kidneys).

I respect my Vet completely but she still insists that high protein levels are a burden on the kidneys and I shouldn't be feeding him in this way. However, I have satisfied myself enough with researching myself to go against this advice :)

One website I use for advice on feeding my dog actually mentions Wysong and talks about it being a high quality food and suitable for dogs in early stage renal failure. However, they do caution about the phosphorous levels for dogs with more advance renal failure. Not a concern for you though :)

So, it seems to me that it does seem a high quality food :) As I say though, others will know far more than me about it I am sure

I no ferrets require a high protien and learned this the hard way with the other 2 we had- one ended up with renal failure due to not enough protien, I was buying ferret food mixed with high quality kitten food as suggested by the pet store. Could this food (Epigen) maybe be to high in protien for the ferrets or not enough? I now only feed just ferret food, I was feeding Evo ferret(mixed with Arct-2) but P&G bought them out so no more of that. I just checked out JWB tried to get a sample but they don't ship here :-( I like having 2 different foods to feed them but now just the Wysong.

Yes I only buy it for my dogs as a treat cause was not to sure about it plus when I did buy it as their food they gorged themselves. Plus it being safe for dogs/cats/ferrets I found kinda weird cause I thought all require different  on how a food can be good for all 3.

Thanks for the reply :-)

colliecrew is right.

The high protein/ renal theory was disproved long ago.  I was once quite annoyed with one of my puppy buyers, she took a puppy off puppy food, and changed her to a low protein feed - because her neighbour told her that she would get kidney failure.

I don't know what the answer is about educating people.  It's still such a popular belief, long after it has been disproved.

I guess I will def stick with this food for the ferrets- they are coming out with a fish and venison- so may also try the venison... Since they do need a high protien hopefully they will have a long and healthy life :-)

I may give some a lil more often to the dogs since they to seem to really enjoy it. They also seem alot more happier since I have been giving them different food everytime I buy a bag- they seem to enjoy it to.
