Can someone please explain to me what a tick looks like?  This is a first for Barney and I'm not sure what to do :-(  I have discovered a little brownish thing under his eye, it looks like a wee brown lentil sticking out his skin, it doesn't have any legs and is perfectly smooth.  There is a small lump under it, could this be a tick?  Any advice welcome.

Thanks
Jax

The amall lump under itis probably the head buried in the skin - if you look very carefully you might be able to see the fringe of legs at the surface of the dog's skin.

Tick information.

That sounds like a tick.  They do have legs, but right by the head and you wont see them whilst its feeding.  You cant just pull them out as you could leave mouth parts in your dog and they could get infected.  If you google tick removal videos you will find great ones to show you exactly what to do.
I recently heard if you rub the end of a tick in small circles gently with your finger after 30 seconds it will remove itself to find somewhere more peaceful to feed.  Had to try it recently and couldn't believe how easy it was, or how quick it worked.

Thanks everyone :-)  It certainly looks like a tick.  As I have never removed one before and as it is very close to his eye, we are off to the vets at 1650hrs.

Thanks again.

Your vet will be rubbing his hands in glee at such easy money!  :) Get yourself an O'Tom tick remover tool, they come in a packet of 2 including one very tiny one very suitable for getting out ticks close to eyes! They will probably sell them at your vet and quite often work out cheaper there than paying postage buying online, they're about £3-4.

Back from the vet, it was a tick and she removed it free of charge :-)  I did buy a pack of O'Tom tick twisters for £4.

Good for you!  :-)

I think I bought every contraption on the planet, until I discovered those lovely little green hooks.  Best invention ever!

My dogs often get ticks which I remove using a tick remover tool but the one Harley had on his eyelid I couldn't bring myself to remove as every time I tried to put the tool on the tick his eyelid kept moving and I had visions of it stretching out when I pulled the tick .... so it was off to the vet for that one. It was removed without charge and having seen how far his eyelid did stretch I was glad that I didn't do it myself.... being a wuss where eyes are involved :-)
