someone please help me, my dog is 16months old and has demodex the vet has put me on to doing the aludex washes once a week but my dog seems to be alot worse for having these baths, does anyone know anything that will help him and get rid of the mites without using aludex???

Depends on the breed - there is a medication but it is not licences and you have to sign for it also it can't be used on collies or collie crosses.

I assume your vet took a scrape, and if so an unusual number of mites can not be missed so you will have the correct diagnosis and it will work given time.

If your vet did not take a scrap then I would go back and ask for one to confirm the problem is demodex and not something else that the usual treatment for demodex is making worse.

If your Vet is 50 years old or older, ask him about Benzyl Benzoate.

Doesn't of the spot on treatments cover demodex, will go off and find the name.

Most dogs are born with demodex mites, but they only increase to problematic levels giving rise to symptoms if the immune system is defective or immature and under stress.

In the latter case symptoms are usually mild and resove with amturitya dn ending of the stress factor.

So in additon to treating the symptoms of demodex teh issue with the immune system needs to be addresses.  Ceratinly looking at immune system boosting supplements may be wise.

Advocate by Bayer treats Demodex

Be careful that contains ivermectin and several breeds cannot take it. I had a collie with that problems many years ago and the only way we got rid of it she was bathed twice a week and treated with a very strong antibiotic. The vet did a scraping but if the mite is not near the surface it will not show on the slide. Her skin on her rump went like elephants skin it took quite a while to get rid of it but it never returned.

My boy was prescribed Advocate and it did the trick

Yes it was Ivermectin I was talking of, would be careful before using that and definitely have the diagnoses confirmed before continuing any treatment.  We do not know in which way the dogs skin is worse.

Advocate is prescription only so only the Vet could give it.

I had a boy with this problem some years ago and he was prescribed Aludex.  He had to be bathed once a week for 5 weeks with it.  It often took 2 or 3 washes before I saw any improvement at all but it always worked.  I had to persevere.

My dog had Demodex earlier this year and used Aludex. It took 6 weeks of bathing but it worked well even though I too felt it was not helping in the beginning, I carried on and finally the mites gave up and died, but they certainly didn't give up without a fight. It is well worth persevering

I was told by a young vet at my practise that my 8 month old dog had demodex despite not finding any mites from the scrape. He gave me advocate to use and I went back to see my usual vet for a second opinion when he returned from his holidays, because he had already done a scraping previously and told me she did not have demodex and she has been diagnosed with jeuvenile pyoderma which my older dog also had as a puppy, and each year until she was fully matured. Advocate does state on the leaflet about not using it on collies and certain breeds but as said the vet prescribes it and should know that!

Demodex is a naturally occuring mite that lives on the skin pretty much like the mites we all have living in our eyelashes. In a normally healthy dog it would cause no problems. If the immune system becomes compromised in some way then the mites proliferate and can start to cause a problem. The immune system of a puppy can quickly become compromised by too early vaccination, too vigorous chemical worming and flea treatment, antibiotic treatment, corticosteroid treatment, poor diet along with stress. It may just be one factor or it could be a combination of factors that stress the immune system to the point where it can't handle the demodex mite and starts up with a skin condition.

Homeopathic Sulphur and Psorinum can make the body hostile to mites and could probably help once you have the condition under control but you could always ask your own vet for a referral to a Homeopathic Vet and try to solve the problem naturally..??

Many many skin conditions arise within 3 months of a vaccination event and although I suppose its difficult to prove the link between the vaccine and the skin condition, its just a bit too much of a coincidence for my liking (in fact i find the statistics for so many health problems arising within 3 months of a vaccination really alarming, and would rather seek a natural alternative if there is one)
