Megan has Royal Canin mini adult food and she seems happy with it.  Should i stick with it or look for something more aimed at a pregnant dog.  What do you feed yours?

I feed mine on Burns and will be sticking to that, but using one of the two that is aimed at pregnant bitches or underweight dogs. Probably a good idea might be to contact Royal Canin customer services, as they should be able to advise which would be best for your bitch.

Most people seem to switch onto puppy food towards the end of the pregnancy, so depends how far through you are.

We use Royal Canin HT42D which is especially for pregnant bitches, we feed this from around 4 weeks before season is due until 6 weeks post mating, then change mum over to Royal Canin Starter which I wean my pups onto.

Hi Sharon, that sounds perfect.  Where do you get it from, i can't seem to find it anywhere on the net, apart from american sites?  Is the kibble quite small cause Megan only weighs 2kg, and is quite fussy.  Also what do you think about the Royal Canin breed specific food?

We used the RC breed specific food for our Maine Coone cats - it was very expensive and they didn't do so well on it. Think it's probably best to stick to what you know and what Megan likes!

Some bitches do okay on the puppy version of their normal food, others get a dreadfully upset stomach from it. I would be very wary of changing food for a pregnant bitch as the last thing you want is a stomach upset and weight loss. For my toys I feed them Nature Diet adult normally and with them I was able to switch to the puppy version no problem when pregnant. Main thing is to increase number of meals and basically offer as much as they want over several meals, from about the 6th week of pregnancy -not before.

I do the same as Sharon M. You get it at shows or Royal Canin will deliver

Do you have to go to the breeder section on royal canin to order because i couldn't find it, any chance of posting a link?????

You have to join the RC breeder club to be able to order, I think the requirements are at least 2 breeding bitches owned and you need a kennel name with the KC. (I used to be a member but stopped feeding it both to my dogs and cats as I wasn't happy with it.)

I have the same breed as you, and found that the breed specific food was nowhere near as good as the RC mini adult.  I change my bitches over to the mini junior around week 6.  Simply because mine never seem to go 9 weeks anyway.  Maidens especially only tend to carry for 8 weeks (totally viable whelps.)

Like Marianne, I do start them on Nature Diet as well.  I find that giving all dry food isn't well tolerated when their mouths are sore from cleaning pups.

As I am considering a change, my present pups and mum are having a half and half mix with the dry food.  If you are looking for a suitable size kibble for toys, I am using the puppy small kibble from fish4dogs mixed with RC.  I can certainly recommend.
