Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bleeding cut nail, help?
- By Lacy Date 04.09.10 18:55 UTC
Have always been so careful, but today have made a real mess!!! One nail has been cut to short into the quick and has bled badly, thought I had got it sorted but noticed when he was eating this evening it had started again. Have got it to stop and have made a little toe guard, he is now resting in his basket with me in the kitchen where I shall be spending the evening to prevent him moving around! Is there anything I can do to help prevent it bleeding again (something I might have here or should have that would help)?  Many thanks, Lacy.

You can use the stuff men use if they cut themselves using an open razor, think it is called a steptic stick or something like that. But I would not worry it will stop because the blood vessel will contract, I know it looks bad but a very little blood goes a long way.

Nova. Many thanks my OH does have one but have you ever tried them? I've always thought I had a good pain threshold but .... they sting like hell!

Witch Hazel will stop bleeding.

You can get clip stop at shows but not sure if local pet shops do it.

Lacy do not worry about the stinging on your armpit or whatever the dog will not react the same on a nail the nerves are not the same in a nail. If you are worried then use it if not leave it to nature.

Brainless. Thanks, I do have some with a clip stop but they were/are not powerful enough to make a clean cut, our vet has joked that having to cut a BH's nails ruins his clippers.  It was suggested I get some the same as his and have been OK until today. Poor boy no wonder he grumbled. Have just Googled nail bleeding and corn starch is mentioned, have you used that?

You've misunderstood clip stop is a orangey brown powder that stops bleeding.

Thanks, will try and find some.

You could use a bar of soap, someone told me they used a teabag!
I've got the orange powder, they also do it in liquid form, it stains like h**l, so does potassium permanganate so not ideal if you've got plain carpets.

Yes corn flour will work and soap, anything that slows the flow allows the blood to clot and therefore start to heal. I take it that you dog does not have a clotting problem, if he does then you need a vet.

Nova. No clotting problem, just a careless owner who cut too far.

Stick his foot in the cornflour, no need for Bisto, it will stop in it's own time. May be best to keep him off your bed though. Once asked my sister to cut the nails of one of my dogs and it took 3 days before he stopped leaving little spots all over the carpet, her face was very funny but I could not laugh as she was acutely embarrassed having been a vet nurse for 25 years.

Old Victorian bed, 3' high, consequently no dogs,  if allowed up as a treat or ill get to sleep underneath. Have also learnt my lesson in the past when a nail bled (nothing like tonight) and I did not notice, untill I looked at the 7 day old hall carpet. Polka dot, spent two hours crawling up and down with vanish.

Hope it's OK I just use talc if I ever do it.

I know it's too late now, but in my kit I have super glue and cotton buds.  If I do accidentally quick them, I put a drop of the superglue on the cotton bud and hold it to their toenail.  Stops the bleeding immediately (even better than the styptic sticks) and seals it up.  It's the same stuff as 'liquid skin' that's used for sealing wounds, so it's safe and hygenic.

The reason you put it on a cotton bud first though is to avoid gluing toes together (OOPS).

Have you ever tried a dremel tool? I have found this much easier plus keeps the nail clean. My Tiva hates getting her nails done because I clipped her once but since I started with the dremel she don't mind at all.

I heard flour works- not sure how true

How is the nail today Lacy, has it stopped or does he keep reopening it?

Nova. What a butcher the poor boy has as an owner. I have just noticed blood on the sofa throw and a few spots on the carpet but the nail does not appear to be bleeding at the moment and have been checking it. We've been for a good walk (on soft ground), he's chased his cousin around the garden, and had a bath (perhaps not a good idea but had rolled in fox and the smell overwhelming). So paws crossed that it will continue to stay dry. Many thanks, for your assistance last evening. I have always insisted that I cut their nails but black ones are not easy. Will crawl around the carpet tomorrow in day light with vanish!

Black nails are difficult and we all do at some time or another, I do try to clip a small amount every week but have to say I forget sometimes.

Ahhhh Lacy - I did the exact same thing last week to one of my dogs! I felt so horribly guilty when he snatched his paw away and I saw the blood! It was the last claw to be cut as well!

It's hard to believe the blood that can come out of one tiny nail isn't it? After sitting for 30 minutes with a towel attached to his toe (!) I looked up how to stop the bleeding online and, as someone else here has said, flour of any kind will help. It seemed to work for him :)

I've also bathed his foot daily in dilute hibiscrub as an open nail could be a route for infection
