Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / mating two bitches
- By MandyC [gb] Date 29.08.10 11:36 UTC
Hi all, me again.

This is in connection to my other post about my girl coming into season early and me trying to decide if i mate this time or wait til the next season.
Well to complicate matters even more due to her being early her time for mating is now going to clash with a bitch that has been booked for my boy for a while, she rang yesterday to confirm that her girl is in on time and would be ready around the weekend, same as my girl!!! Grrr

So would you refuse this lady with her girl if you went ahead with your own girl or who thinks he would be capable to mate both so close together, i have never had this situation before so wondered what you more experienced people have done in this situation

Would you mate them on alternate days so he only mates once a day, what about infection, though this girl is a maiden female too.

Thanks again
Mandy

Your first priority is to the lady who's booked your dog in advance; you couldn't possibly be so dishonourable as to refuse her and leave her in the lurch so late in the day. If necessary you wait till next season for your own bitch - or do what you're considering making the other lady do, and find a different stud at short notice for yours.

I'm quite a firm believer in fate & this probably is fate telling you to wait with your own bitch, as the other bitch has been booked for a while.

i agree with JG that your obligation to the person whose booked your biy comes 1st......and as for infection, well surely you only insist on swabbed bitches coming to your dog??
hes should capable of producing a good sample when mating another bitch  within quite a short time so there shouldnt be an issue.

Sperm is stored for some while in the body of the male so the mating of two bitches should not be a problem, but if you are still not sure then leave your bitch till her next season. I am sure now you have had time to think you realise you could not possible put off the bitch that is booked and has come in at the expected time, to do so would be dishonourable.

no i have no intention of refusing her at all, i have made all the arrangements with her to visit next saturday, just wondered what others do in that situation as i have never been put in that position before, also wanted advice on mating both if that were to be the case as if one is going to be waiting it would of course be my girl (which is what will probably be happening anyway). Not just this instance with my own bitch but even two outside bitches they happened to be ready at the same time what do you all do if that haapened to you.......just curious really.

As to infection do you all insist all visiting bitches are swabbed first?

Re the swabbing - yes

None of the owners of the dogs my bitches have visited, have ever asked if they have been swabbed. There has never been a problem with either my bitches or the stud after a visit.

Same with the ladies who have visited my gentleman

Same as lexy, but then boys in our breed don't get a lot of use, lucky to see half a dozen bitches in their lifetimes (perhaps more if imports), often less.

Could you use a different dog on your own bitch this time and then use your boy for a subsequent litter? Or do the ages of dog / bitch not work for another litter in the future?
- By MandyC [gb] Date 30.08.10 22:33 UTC
This would be my girls final litter and i particularly want a puppy from this combination so if i dont mate her this time round then i will have one last attempt for a puppy next year, the sad thing is the one puppy that she had but lost last xmas was a dark red girl with minimal white, exactly what i was hoping for :(

I am probably going to wait now until her next season.

just a quick update....people are SO rude.
havent heard anything all week from bitches owner then she rang this morning to say she wanted to come tommorrow instead of today, i said thats fine and to call me later to organise a time, she called while i was out with my dogs, i rang her back a couple of hrs later....no answer, rang mobile, she said she would ring me back in 5 mins....then sent a text to say she has gone somewhere else as her girl is ready today!!!

To think i was skipping my own really wanted litter to honour our agreement and use my boy with her girl this time instead......very strange and very annoying, and to send a text too

Have you still got time to use him on your girl?
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 04.09.10 19:56 UTC
Seems strange to me that she's been able to organise another (suitable) stud dog at such short notice?
- By MandyC [gb] Date 04.09.10 20:18 UTC
Thankfully i can try them tommorrow as my girl is on day 13, so i can try her with him tommorrow, maybe its fate and now i will get the puppy i really wanted that had a sad result on our try last year.

Yes i too think its odd that this morning she was coming to me tommorrow and then by late afternoon she had gone somewhere else, i think she just may of found a closer or cheaper stud.......so if money is her priorty instead of the bloodlines, temperament and health tests then i prefer not to be part of it anyway.

Ah, the joys of having a boy at stud.  Just thank your lucky stars that this person is now someone else's problem.  I hope there is still time to mate your own girl.  Maybe the other people have done you a favour :-)
- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 04.09.10 20:31 UTC
MandyC, I am a great believer in things happening for a reason, so I would say you are better off out of it and I keep my fingers ( and paws) crossed that you get a successful mating with your girl. As you say some people have no idea how to treat others!
- By Nova Date 04.09.10 20:43 UTC
Sounds as if you may have it timed just right, hope all goes well and as others have said you do not want to deal with people who are so unprofessional.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 05.09.10 08:06 UTC
That is rude! Hope all goes well with your own girl now. :-)

Yes Mandy you've had a lucky escape by the sounds of it.  Very annoying for you though, especially given you wanted to use the dog on your bitch.  I hope too that you have success when you try them and produce much nicer pups!!
