I have a 5 month old male collie pup who just plain smells when he comes in from out of doors. It is a sort of sweet distinctive smell that is very hard to stomach ( I'm pregnant by the way which makes it doubly hard to take). Does anyone have any experience with getting rid of that kind of scent, I can't bath him daily.
Anyone try those pet colognes before? My shelties do not carry this odor and eat the same food etc. So please help, or send a gas mask asap!
Thanks!

Probably just his natural scent im afraid!! I dont think pet colognes etc are hugely effective.
Theres a tiny possibility it could be medical related. In some conditions (ie renal disease or diabetes), a sweet smell may be one of the symtoms. Perhaps it may be a good idea to get him a vet check to make sure its nothing serious before trying to disguise it.
Good Luck!

Thanks Stacey,
I've been really busy this time of year with seasonal craft shows I do with my mother and also expecting a baby any day now, plus the three other rugrats.
I've peeked in here now and then, but with some of these recent postings on the other boards have been at a loss for words......
Some silly stuff going on if ya know what I mean.
Anyway thanks all for the support on my stinking Collie. I'm taking him in to be neutered soon and will ask the vet. I know that he's healthy though, reason being is a neighbor breeds collies and she always has this smell about her, and now I know why. I'm constantly checking and worring if I too smell now-----ugh!
A friend of mine suggested chamomile soap, I think I'll give it a whirl.

Couldn't be his anal glands could it? That's a really offensive smell :( If it is you could rub his butt over with a baby wipe to take it away when he comes in.

Thanks Gina and Quinn,
I'm a bit suprised that I was missed, I'm glad though, does the soul some good especially at Christmas time.
I don't believe it's his anal glands, but his skin odor. I haven't had time for experimentation of soaps etc. yet. Busy, busy week with kid Christmas programs and parties.Poor guy is so big, clumsy and cute, but awfully smelly. Maybe instead of naming him Shadow my daughter should have chosen Stinky.

i sympathise totally - i literally couldn't stand the smell of my mum's two dogs when i was pregnant, i'd just be sick if i was near them. The smell didn't go away when they were bathed either, so i would assume they didn't smell any different than normal i was just sensitive to it :( Never figured out a way to make them smell less to me apart from to walk around with a bottle of lime essential oil in my hand at all times ready to sniff when i went near them!!! Hope you have better luck than me!
Annette

I couldn't stand the smel of jeat, especially it being cooked when I was pregnant, it is probably you rather than the dog!

I couldn't stand the smell of meat, especially it being cooked when I was pregnant, it is probably you rather than the dog! :D
<<it is probably you rather than the dog!>>
Brainless!!! Are you really suggesting that Carrisa smells :)
Christine

No, but that her sense of smel is to blame at the moment!!! Taste is something else too, Galaxy chocolate taseted extra good while I was pregnant, as did oranges!

my doby had a problem like this bad wind and bad skin odor, but think im on top of it now i add prozyme once a day to his food has also improved his coat so it was his digestive system causeing the probs including the skin odor prozyme is a probiotic formulation which crowds out harmfull bacteria replaceing these with beneficial bacteria comes in powder form so can just be added easly to meals also great for stress and pups that are going to new home's or car sickness,
if you want to try it drop me an email i will give you tell number and address ect, wont post info anymore,

Well, he seems to be smelling a little better. He got caught in a real down pour, wouldn't go in his house, when I brought him in I thought he would be really smelling bad, but no it was the opposite. What a silly pup. He is really sweet and goofy, glad I got him, even though he can be such a pain in the rear. He is a virtual alarm clock. I thought with the holidays and the kids out of school for a couple of weeks that I could sleep in an extra hour. NOT! He is so funny, wakes up between 6-6:30 am each morning with this high pitch whinning yawn. It's really too funny. Now my shelties, they would stay quiet until I was ready to take them out even if it killed them. It really is amazing how different breeds can be. I haven't had the baby yet, it's my offical due date today. I could pop at any moment! I hope everyone is having a great holiday!

The waiting is the hardest part isn't it!!! My son was eight days late - i remember waking up most mornings thinking "yes!! Today's gonna be the day!!" Well worth the extra wait though :)

Thankyou Thankyou! My last delivery was a nightmare. I had to wait to push the baby out until the nurses had a shift change. All the while hubby standing there saying " but honey, I don't even have rubber gloves". As soon as the nurses and Dr. finally came back the baby was out. Scary experience.

P.S. Me and my mom keep joking about just getting out the whelping box, makes me laugh.
