My dog's molars have got quite a bit of tartar on them, I have tried to clean them to no avail.  He is fed on raw food incl raw chicken wings which he does appear to chew correctly.  All his other teeth seem to be in good condition and I use the lintbells toothcleaner ............... I really want to avoid taking him to the vets for this so any advice would be great.

Never used one but I have seen them on grooming sites which is a tartar remover.

Something like the above, but not sure if its advisable to do it yourself over a vet doing it?

Thanks for the reply, I have one and I did have a go but I need something to loosen it first ................ I will eventually have to take him to the vets I suppose but that will be the last resort.

If you place the edge of the descler under the gum margin and pull downwards, the hard tartar will chip off - it's like the scale in a kettle!  The molars are much easier to clean with a descaler than the incisors.

I will give it a go, thanks again

That's what I was going to say.  If you just push back the gum slightly, you can usually feel an 'edge' which you just pull at.  My dogs usually come away in one piece.  It's a mucky job but saves a GA.

Chicken wings are okay but you could try giving him a big raw meaty bone? Something that he can literally "get his teeth into" and spend many an enjoyable hour with. Lamb bones are good as they are also fully consumable or a meaty marrowbone where they really have to work at it with their front teeth to get the marrow out. Meaty beef rib bones are great too as they spend time nibbling the meat off and then crunching the rest. How long has he been fed on a raw diet? If only recently converted then tartar build up from commercial food can take a while to dislodge but big raw meaty bones definitely help the process along :)

I'd try the Petzlife gel-its the only stuff I have found which actually works  http://www.petzlife.co.uk/.It cleared  nearly all the tartar on my elderly BSD and the small amount that was left came off easily with a light scale after the gel had softened it.
