my girl had her litter five days early yesterday, after a difficult night and one dead pup we took her to the out of hours surgery (vets-now based at pdsa) and they gave her an oxi injection, the first pup was born while still in the vets, when we got home she delivered her second puppy, unfortanly there was no more development and when we took her back they done a c section and she had three more pups. she has five lovely boys and we have a lovely bill for £1500, i am delighted my girl and her puppies are ok but what daylight robbery for a c section.

Two out of hours visits on a bank holiday and a c-section, sounds about right to me unfortunately.

One of the joys of breeding I'm afraid.

I must be very lucky then. Had a number of c-sections over the years and never paid more than £500.  Last one was in January.  Sunday afternoon call out for check over and oxytocin then late evening emergency section for three dead pups and one live one (the first time I have ever lost pups during a c-section and over the last 30 years, I've had a few).  Total bill £480.  My Vet just charges 'Sunday' rates for Bank Holidays.  Small practice of just three Vets, always on call, no referrals elsewhere out of hours.

Ellie's c-section was £620 and that was in surgery hours - I'm glad she was in no distress so I was able to hang on until the Monday!

This seems to be the normal prices for Vets Now -generally much higher than for normal vets, but what normal vets do their own out of hours these days......... hardly any. :( :(

I must say i have a fab vet (sadly due to retire any day now) but he done an emergency c-section for me on my large breed girl out of hours on new years eve, it was very sad as she only had 1 puppy and sadly she was already gone, he charged me just £200, he is a star, but there's not many out there like him anymore.

Too right Mandy. When l had my first dog, over 40 years ago, Vets, like nurses, used to look on their profession as a vocation. Sadly nowadays, it seems as though it is just another well-paid job to go into. In fact, from what l have heard, some Vets don't even seem to like animals very much.

I stayed with my first Vet from the time that she first qualified, until her retirement, and on many occasions, l have been in the waiting room, when someone has come in to pay a small amount off their bill, which was always accepted with good grace and no sign of embarrassment on either side. I couldn't see that happening very often nowadays.

My vet doesn't increase prices on a Sunday at all - the practice is routinely open for appointments  on both Saturday and Sunday and at the same price as a weekday. They do their own out of hours service as well - a small family practice that I changed to last year and cannot fault the service at all. Not the cheapest practice I have ever used but certainly not the dearest either and the care given is second to none. Animals having to stay in are supervised at all times whether that be day or night whereas this was not the case at my previous veterinary practice who didn't even do evening appointments let alone weekend ones.
