That's how it feels until you get matings that don't go smoothly, LOL
My third generation bitch and first champion was difficult to mate. She had plenty of libido, but she wanted to be the stud dog!! Unfortunately her chosen suitors were inexperienced, as all the nice experienced boys were too closely related to her.
first attempt the dog was a bit overawed and kept getting thrown out at the crucial moment and wasting his seed on stony ground ;)
On the next occasion I resorted to a series of blood tests (which she hated and struggled like mad on three consecutive days). took her to same stud, and as soon as she started playing him up he walked off and would have no more to do with her, so off to another stud (was to be her second husband).
This was a Young but eager male and by sheer luck and someone holding her firmly so she did not move at the crucial moment resulted in one mating just about the last likely fertile day. We got a smallish litter.
IN a year or so we decided to repeat the mating (litter had been smallish but quality, and there were still no other experienced males I thought compatible). We arrived at the stud dogs and she wasn't happy from trying to get her out of the car. there was no way she was having any of it.
Next season the boy came to stay with em early in her season so she could get comfortable with him.
At the appropriate time she as all over him like a rash, but wanting to mount him, but tolerating him doing the same. I spend several days on my knees with two medium size dogs trying to keep her rear still enough fr him to hit the spot, we finally manage to get two matings and a litter of 7.
When she was 6 1/2 an older dog was imported,a nd I thought it would be nice to have pups from a different combination. I thought we might not get anywhere and she was as easy as pie!!!
From the male owners perspective males can be injured when a bitch panics during the tie, or some bitches over react in telling the male no and can cause him damage.
Sometimes no matter how willing the male really has no idea what to d and needs to be physically guided (they need to learn to accept assistance).
I tried a lovely 7 year old champion male who Had only managed to sire a litter of two pups. he was totally clueless,a nd would dismount after a few seconds of trying, obviously living with another male he had learnt not to be too persistent in this behaviour. I tried him with two bitches, never got a litter from either and only succeeded in getting matings as the bitches went over, and had to hold him in place.
Yep can be really quick and easy, especially when you don't want it to happen
:D
