Topic Dog Boards / General / Tetanus required or not ? for my 6 year old son.

I'm after a bit of advice regarding a tetanus jabs.

My six year old has been camping with my sister and her two girls. The owners of the site had a collie which has nipped my son earlier this morning. It seems to of been a complete accident as the dog was chasing a rope which my son had.
However my sons leg is badly marked , he has a deep bruise which is slightly swollen and the skin is scratched , very lightly broken , enough I'd say for it to have weeped but it definitely has not been bleeding.

The question I'm hoping someone can answer is does he need a tetanus?
He hates going to the doctors so I don't want to go and stress him out if it isn't needed .
Thanks .

Don't think this indecent is a problem but I would want a 6 year old to have a tetanus jab anyway, they are prone to getting injuries in the wide open spaces and the garden and if they have had a tetanus then all you need is a plaster.

I had a dog bite just recently, but barely broke the skin, more bruising, but was still advised to have tetanus jab as a precaution...as they said, tetanus is a nasty thing to get...  But is your son not protected from his childhood immunisations (polio, diptheria, tetanus)...that is supposed to last him until he is about 14...

I think the tetanus jab is now reckoned to be good for 10 yrs so if he had the usual todler jabs he should be OK

Its more than that now. My last one was well over 10yrs ago, I got badly bitten on my leg earlier in the year and called the hospital for advice and they said tbh its not really a worry they have any more with UK dogs. They did say that I should be covered and I think it was about 15yrs ago my last vaccination of tetanus.

BUT this is a 6yr old and I would call the hospital for advice as they will be the ones dealing with incidents like this more so than a GP surgery.

They now no longer give a tetanus every 10 years . If you have had 5 doses ( 3 as a baby, 1 as a pre-schooler and 1 as a school leaver or 5 doses in a lifetime ) then you don't need boosters unless you go to casualty with a dirty wound and it is needed , or you require it as a travel vaccination.

Thanks everyone , I've just called my out of hours to check , I should of thought to earlier , and they said he is covered from his jabs already.
I'm soo relieved.
