Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / How to stop mum eating puppy mess!!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 25.08.10 13:39 UTC
My puppy is now 8 weeks old and she's staying with us, but of course we do have some inside accidents still, although she's pretty good at going outside for such a young age. Problem is mum is still happy to clean up afterwards, both wee and poo, and really by this age I'd rather she left it and I'll deal with it, but even outside I have to be telling mum to 'leave it' while I run for a poo bag, or stopping her licking at the grass where the puppy weed. And if I'm not on the case and she does something inside, it's half eaten 10 seconds later when I suddenly smell it and realise I've taken my eyes off puppy again... Is there a way to discourage mum from tidying up, or will it stop naturally when puppy is a little older?? I hope I don't have to follow puppy around with poo bags for the rest of her life!!

Hi my pups are a similar age and she is just stopping although eats selected ones. I have noticed she looks at it then at me and if she sees I am on it she leaves it alone. The odd tasty one still gets snaffled tho. It will stop soon then it's poo bags forever....

It will stop naturally with you vigilance (lack of opportunity) and as pup gets older.

Vigilance is not brilliant which is why my dogs are always slow to housetrain, I lazily allow them to make mistakes because I don't watch them closely enough. Will try to do better!!

My litter is just over 9 weeks and if I'm not quick, mum still cleans up after them,  I am keeping one but still have another 2 that stayed slightly longer due to holidays etc.  So I'm hoping once the other two have gone to their new homes I can watch ours very closely before mum beats me to it.
