Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / dogs not eating rabbit
- By furriefriends Date 21.08.10 11:07 UTC
Sorry about title couldnt think of one. My two dogs are raw fed great no problems there now being a good dog owner I try to increase the typesof meat I can get them and ordered some rabbit.
First problem as I put aside my woosy townie attitudes the rabbits were just that dead rabbits as I they had just dropped dead. Next problem what to do with them the dogs werent interested in a whole rabbit with fur and all so found a freind who as it turned out could "prepare " such things. Yep he did a great job . Trying not to be squeamish and it does take quite a lot for me to be squeamish I cut it up, proudly took out to the dogs for dinner  and guess what ? absoultly no interest the little whatsits !!!
Anyone want 3 intact rabbits maybe I should put them on the selling board LOL
O well back to the more usual stuff. Please dont suggest I cook them not sure if I could manage that I am already cooking heart to get them to eat it 'cos  the little devils wont eat that or offal
Thinking of going into business making and selling liver/heart cake !

Starve them for a day or two then they will eat what's put in front of them.

Id only suggest cooking it for yourself.

If I coudl get access to 'wildies', or any Rabbit really, I would keep the back legs and loin for me and the dogs could have the rest.  Rabbit is really tasty.

Thats not a bad idea. Unfortunately this is dog meat not human and I dont want to chance eating it although I agree the heart looked and smelt great.
btw I got my delivery from The dog food company first order the quality is v.good.

I feed mine rabbit with no problems, they sit there with a knife and fork lol.  its one food they will gobble.  Try cooking it in a slow cooker even for a few hours, it increases the flavour.  Mine will have have it (which surprized me) nearly raw when my mum inlaw took it out too soon.  otherwise i fully cook it and serve with pasta lol.

couldn't eat it myself yeuk!!

Hmmm, I know my lot love Rabbit... One of my boys has just caught another one, my goodness the rabbit put up a fight, the noise it made

Anyway i have a freezer full of them and will defrost as and when. They were never interested in rabbit which i got from the butcher, only with fur and killed on our land..

I wonder if this due to some of them freezing before we get to buy it.  When mine have refused it (which is rare) its been previously frozen so does make you wonder how long its been there.

Hmm can't help really, I've orderd rabbits from The Dog Food co and my dog LOVED them! I think he thought he caught it himself as I put it in the garden and let him find it himself lol
Scott will do minced rabbit (although not advertised on his site) so maybe just try that?

some of mine will eat rabbit if it is cut into bits for them. 2 of mine love whole rabbit, they dont leave anything except the bowel!!! Ewwww, they happily devour head, feet and fur. I use scott too but have never ordered rabbit but have seen them in the van. My brother-in-law goes shooting weekends so he brings me back what he gets, if he gets a few i freeze some and mine love em just the same when they are defrosted.

My friend has the same problem so she played 'tuggy' with one and then her dogs ate it - dont think I could do that tho.  I wish I had a supply of rabbit as mine have tried it and loved it.

I missed a great chance to introduce my dog to furred raw food today - a freshly killed squirrel was in the central reservation of a dual carriageway as we walked along, wind blowing its tail enticingly, sadly there wasn't a break in the traffic for me to get it.

Mmmmm..... have to say that my mother and others I mentioned it to were less enthusiastic....lol
I don't want to appear barbaric... but once it's dead, it's dead..... And grey squirrel is now on the menu in some posh London restaurants.

I don't think i could give it them with fur on.  But saying that, they are small breed and have small chops, I don't think they'll manage it.  Doesn't stop them with a bone though.

Maybe i should catch fresh and learn to skin it, save me a few quid lol.

for £2 I think I would buy them !!!
