Is there anywhere online that you don't have to pay for, nor have to send off for information that allows you to see registrations of death?
I've been searching and only ending up with sites which want money or you have complete forms to be sent off.

It depends on how old the records are. You can obtain sight of records from the Church of the Latter Day Saints - they keep details of all deaths apparently - and have a website which I think is called Family Indexing. It has records from all over the world - not just deaths but census, births, marriages, passenger lists for immigration to Canada and USA in the distant past etc, etc.

We think that the person in question only died on thursday last week. So wanted to confirm this before we contact the family, also normally states what they passed away with?

Getting such recent records is almost impossible on line, if you know the area of the death you could try the local records office who may confirm over the phone - or if in a small town you could try phoning the local funeral directors asking if they are handling the funeral off ???

Or look at the local paper, they have obituaries in there.
I tried the CLDS site and couldnt find what I was looking for.

I don't think you will be able to find that record then - even if you paid for a search as it takes longer than that to go on public record. Registering a death is more complicated nowadays. You can't just turn up at a Registrar's as you now have to have an appointment and not all offices are open every day - so it is possible that the death hasn't yet been registered. We had to wait four days and there was only one appointment time available on that day although we could have gone to another office 30 miles away but I certainly wasn't in a fit state to travel there at the time.

Was just coming back to say the same thing Lea, you could also try putting the name in a search engine because if the local paper is on line you may get that up.

Why not just contact the relevant Register Office and ask ??? If you have good reason to want to know, they may tell you. The next of kin would be entitled to have a copy of the death certficate, I had to do a similar thing in Holland last year and the officials there were most helpful.

Online records don't have any records for the last year or two, I think. Certainly wouldn't have that recent a death.

HAve you thought about your local paper?  Usually all local deaths are in there.

Thanks everyone.
The man in question was very ill, he lived on our land and rented a cottage from us. He has lived there since before I was born and used to work on our land, so probably a good 40yrs.
His wife and son live in the cottage and we've not heard or spoken to them as yet. Just wanting facts before we say anything, just in case its not true.
Someone locally put on their FB page he'd passed away but no actual confirmation.
Another family member has offered to go and speak to them and see whats going on.

As it was last week(friday) I saw an Ambulance, not an emergency one outside their place, doors wide open, but couldn't see what was going on.
Nothing in any of the 2 local papers at this time.

If they live that close I would just pop in to see them, sure they'd appreciate the visit if he's passed away or is in hospital. I don't think it's appropriate to be looking for his death certificate, just go and speak to them.

Why not knock on the door and say you had seen the ambulance there and wanted to check that everything was okay and offer help if needed.
- By suejaw Date 24.08.10 15:37 UTC
There are always Ambulances there. Tbh i'm not close to them and can't recall the last time I had any contact with them, prob years ago now. Would seen very strange for me to suddenly pop round to their home.
If we were close or I had regular contact then yes i'd pop over..
I'm leaving to another family member who did have contact with them to a certain degree.
