Remember with this type of food a lot of the weight is made up of water! This is why the amount seems high. If your dog is doing well on less that is fine, remember it is the manufacturer's interest for you to buy more, not all dogs are equal, some have higher activity levels, energy levels, exercise, work and even gender makes a difference.
I keep Nature's Harvest (similar) in my car for emergencies and the dogs love it.
I feed my 2 toy poodles natures menu (not diet) as one of them won't eat the nature diet. I buy the tins of natures menu as again the fussy one doesn't like the pouches of natures menu (it is a different consistency to the tins) so I assume that is why he will only eat the tinned one. Anyway they share a 400g tin a day which is less than is recommended on the tin which suggests 300g per day for each dog. They are both an ideal weight for their size. I also fill 2 Kongs with Arden Grange mini lamb and rice which they sometimes nibble at usually just before bed time if they want to. Some days they only have the wet food so as long as your dog looks ok for weight i wouldn't worry as I am sure the manufacturers put these amounts on their food to sell more, certainly i am sure that if i tried to give my two that amount they would be over weight.
