has anyone any idea what i could do about my hair?Ive fought with it all my life because its limp and thin.Ok,ive tortured it,permed, coloured, sprayed, etc, but it still looks a mess!Im 61 now and still havent sorted it!its shoulder length,(I look a freak with it any shorter!)any ideas exept lopping off considered!thanks!

When you say you have tried so many things with your hair, like perms etc, was that attempted by yourself or by professionals? I would suggest a visit to an up-to-date fashion hair salon, and have a consultation. They may choose some styles suitable for your hair type and one which you can look after at home.

I've got 'limp, thin' hair too - I'm only a few years younger than you :) The only way that mine looks presentable is to have it fairly short with a good cut :) :) I do have it lightly, highlighted too. Have you been to a really good hairdresser and asked their advice ? :)
- By colliepam Date 18.08.10 08:10 UTC
must admit that, due to lack of funds, ive usually done it myself, with many disasters to grow out along the way-im my own worst enemy!perhaps its time to go to someone who knows what theyre doing!thanks for answering my cry for help!

I would ask around and see if any friends reccomend a particular hairdresser; many of them will give a free consultation before you do the actual deed. I'm not sure where you live but a friend has hers done by Toni & Guy for only a few pounds, they have a special deal.
It's strange how a good haircut can make you feel so much better.
Good Luck, let us know what you go for!

With hair like yours (and mine!) a good cut is imperative.  A skilled hairdresser can shape your hair to suit your face and cut it in such a way to add the illusion of body.  A decent shampoo and a bit of product will also help.

It needn't be too expensive but it's worth persevering to find a salon you like and a hairdresser you trust.  Try going to one that offers good training for it's staff.  Finally be prepared for some lopping as a few layers may help!!

Good luck.  I now drive 140 miles return to a hairdresser.  I used to have a fantastic one in Manchester but since moving to Somerset I've not had much joy so I drive to Salisbury!  Mad

Are you trying to catch someones eye at the park, whilst out with your dog? I bet you are, cheeky....
- By Dill [gb] Date 18.08.10 15:18 UTC
What about a 'body' perm?  it's a light6 perm that adds body to the hair, not curls ;)  that way it makes it easier to manage :)
- By colliepam Date 18.08.10 16:20 UTC
no,sian, ive got enough trouble, thanks!would like to look less scraggy, though!
- By colliepam Date 18.08.10 16:22 UTC
id love a body perm, but ive still got a colour on it,wonder if i could still have one?think id better bite the bullet, and ask round for reccomendations!
- By colliepam Date 18.08.10 16:30 UTC
glad you found a good hairdresser!Daft, but I always feel as if I dont belong,if ever I think about going to a salon!I think im going to have to,though!I think we might have a toni and guy somewhere round here(notts/mansfield)thanks everybody, much appreciated!

I put up with going to the salon too, I hate it though, but I do like to look half decent, I'm a tomboy at heart so hairdressing and home treatments are not my bag so I have no choice.  You belong there as much as me, so put up with the niceties and remember why your there - to come out looking a million dollars. And if your spending money with a salon make sure they treat you like a princess, cos you are one.

I've got fine, limp and very very straight hair.  I keep mine long and using thickening shampoo and conditioner and a thickening mousse, I like Aveda Mousse and Aussie shampoo/conditioner.  I find these products are nice and light and do not weigh down my hair.  Lighter coloured hair looks thinner so get a good colour in a darker shade, try the colour consultant at the hairdressers and they will recommend a colour which will best suits your colouring, especially important as we get older.  I am a pretty boring light brown but it looks so much better than any other colour I've tried and covers my natural highlights nicely, :-)

A good cut, a good diet and lots of sleep also makes a huge difference.  Which reminds me, I haven't had my hair cut since April, would love a decent nights kip and I really am enjoying this packet of choccie biccies right now.  :-D

Smiling at that dogs a babe - I drive over 100 miles return to north somerset for the same reason!!!!  :-)

Im getting older and Ive just discovered John Frieda volumising shampoo, conditioner, and mousse at Sainsburys. Its in pale blue tubes (apart from mousse thats in a mousse thingy) and Im using it and can see a difference. Its not too expensive but I do recommend it.
- By Daisy [gb] Date 19.08.10 12:42 UTC
I've found that (after many years of trying all sorts of things) conditioning no more than once a week and (apart from shampoo) putting nothing else on my hair is the best thing :) :) Too much build up just made my fine hair worse.

Aw,thankyou, what a lovely helpful lot you are!my hairs just above my shoulders, in a kind of bob   at the mo(sitting here with conditoner combed through,as condition is rubbish too(probably the torturing!)il try some of the products mentioned, and will pluck up courage and go to a proper hairdressers.maybe my daughter will come, for moral support!once when i moaned about my hair to someone, she said"at least youve got hair"which made me think. But i want nice hair, dammit!Imean,Ive seen little kids with ten times more hair than me!
- By Dukedog Date 19.08.10 21:01 UTC
Conditioner can usually leave hair looking a bit lank, so beware you don't over condition. It's a shame you don't live in Wales we could pluck up the courage, link arms and go in together. They won't bite though. If you want something to talk about whilst in there, you'll usually find someone interested in talking dogs', a subject your familiar with I'm sure.

yes,its amazing how many other border collie owners ive met in odd places, hospital even!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 23.08.10 15:13 UTC
Sounds like my mum's hair, she's tried perms and all sorts of different hairstyles. Her hairdresser at the moment must not be very good as it really just looks like a limp pathetic mess, poor woman! I have very fine hair like hers, but luckily it's much thicker so although I can't style it into anything and slides and combs etc just fall out, it looks ok just cut to one length.
- By colliepam Date 23.08.10 16:03 UTC
think i might go for a body perm, watch this space!.!!!Its so flat, and doesnt even look respectable tied back, and i havent the face for a short style, wits end isnt in it!

Another vote for the John Frieda volumising products from me.  I've used them for the last four or five years and on the odd occasion that I have run out, I can immediately feel the difference.  Also agree with everyone who said you should get it professionally cut and styled.  Makes all the difference :-)

Nothing works except for a really good cut. I use Aussie Mate volumising products and VO5's or John Freidas, daily, I get fuzzy bed hair, I swop the products around so I don't get a build up, I don't condition too much mostly on the ends...I use straightners(with a heat protector spray) on the roots to give lift. If this doesn't work I wear A HAT :-)

- By Dukedog Date 24.08.10 17:45 UTC
I'm booked into the hairdressers in the morn colliepam do you want me to see if they can fit you in? We could both sit under them hairdryer thingies supping coffee, reading dog mags, and have one of them blue rinses...I could do with a change from red to blue. You could be home by tea-time, you daughter won't recognise ya.

Hi, I was just wondering if you've ever spoken to the doctor about this? as you've had it all your life, I guess it is genetic? what sort of hair did your mum have?

The reason I asked about the doctor, is that sometimes thin hair can have a medical cause - lack of iron storage, thyroid problems, and diet. I've been put on iron tablets recently, as my hair has been thinning on the top, and the blood test showed low iron storage levels.

Just thought I'd mention it, in case! Other than that, I agree there are some good products on the market now. I use Pantene for volumising and body, it's pretty good :)

best wishes
Lindsay

- By colliepam Date 26.08.10 07:29 UTC
thanks lindsay,i have been to the docs on a few occasions, had thyroid tests a many for various reasons, but it seems im ridiculously healthy!ive also taken various vits and supplements that are supposed to help your hair, specialised hair ones, iron, flax seed,b complex etc, imtaking a multi, flax,bs,iron and biotin at the mo,having looked up "hair growth"on google. My mum had lovely thick black hair,my dad had fine light brown. Both my sister and i inherited his, although hers is twice as thick as mine.I dont notice it coming out,but it must be thinning with age,its never been quite this bad!
