Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Puppy food confusion!
- By multuminparvo [gb] Date 18.08.10 19:09 UTC
I'm sorry about the amount of posts im putting on here about food... I have a 4yr old GSD and am picking up my stunning pug pup in 2 weeks! (yay).
My GSD is fussy and is on pets at home wet food in jelly and pedigree mixer:S! NOT GOOD!! i am looking to change this to a nice complete food. preferably the same brand i am going to have puggy on.

The pug breeder gives her pups arden grange or Burgess SUPADOG... I mentioned to her about CSJ and how i have heard nothing bad about it! she said she hadnt heard of it and that I should wean them onto food that doesnt have wheat /gluten in it because that will bloat their stomachs... is wheat/gluten a defintate to avoid??

Other brands I have been looking at are "whites premium" "Harringtons" "Burgess SUPADOG" and "CSJ"... any advice would be grately appreciated... i just want the best for my dogs but all this food talk is confusing...

Thanks so much in advance,

Vicky

I use Arden Grange as my fill in or top up food (I feed raw) and I've always been very pleased with it.  A previously fussy dog became an enthusiastic eater on it too which was no mean feat!

Irrespective of what you may choose to do later I'd highly recommend sticking to the breeders food for the time being.  If you trust your breeder to deliver you a happy healthy pup then it makes sense to follow her advice about food too and changing a young pups diet is not recommended in the early days.

See how you and the pup get on over the next couple of months and re assess it later if you need to.  AG is a good quality food

Have fun with the pup - the anticipation and planning is part of the fun isn't it :)

I would stay with the food the breeder is using at least for a few months.

GSD's as a rule do very well on Arden Grange lamb and Rice, both from a digestive point of view (the ones I know are mainly rescues that have digestive upsets from poor feeding in the past).

It is also my favourite food for my own dogs, and I have been feeding it on it's own or sometimes in conjunction with raw for for the older dogs with Autarky (now owned by Dodsen and Horell) for the last 10 years.

From what I have heard Arden Grange is one of the best foods available. I really would stick with it if I was you. They do wet foods and dry and treats.

I give mine pigs ears aswell and some raw lamb bones from the butchers.

My gsd breeder now uses fish for dogs with great success the dogs love it and their condition is great.  The reason she changed from another premium brand was because of sensitivities in one if her bitches now the whole pack have it,
It is gluten free and would be suitable for both dogs but as previous people have said puggy needs to stay on the same food as the breeder suggest for a while

look at Dog food reviews and dog food analysis. Can't do links, something always goes wrong! It will either help or make you even more confused.
