Just curious but supposing you were to use frozen semen but the bitch did not take, do you still pay the full  amountto the owner  for what the price of the straws would be?

yes as a rule, but depends on the contract you have drawn up. Wehn I sent semen overseas recently they had to pay for all the costs of the semencollection/shipping etc etc but i only took the stud fee on birth of a live litter. Everyone does it differently.

Terms vary just as with live matings, I imported semen and paid all the collection, storage, shipping and import costs PLUS one stud fee on a no pups free return basis. The stud owner sent me enough semen for 4 matings but once my bitch was in whelp the remaining semen could not be used without further stud fees.

Semen from dogs that are already dead will usually incur a fee for the straws as they can't be replaced.

In the purest sense a stud fee is paid for the service i.e delivery of semen of a quality that MAY result in pregnacy. Semen from dead dogs is a precious and limited comodity so yes I would expect to pay for straws and would probably expect the cost to be greater than for a normal stud fee. If there was good quantities of semen on ice it may be reasonable to negotiate for enough semen for 2 attempts should the first AI fail BUT if there is a limited number of breeding units the owner may require a stud fee for each breeding unit issued.
