Topic Dog Boards / Health / Staffy with a rash on her pits!
- By scotgal2009 [gb] Date 19.08.10 07:36 UTC
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could help?
My mums blue staffy 7 month old bitch has a little rash under both her arm pits, the spots arnt ozzing and its not angry red, just like a little rash. Does anyone know what can be put onto it to take it away?
It doesnt seem to bother her at all. Nothing does! But would be good to nip it in the bud before it may get worse?
I have access to skin creams due to working in the health profession so is there any human cream i could put on it or buy a certain animal cream online?
I grudge taking her to the vet as they charge a £40 first fee then anything on top if i can find a cream without having to pay the extra vet fee that would be great!

Thanks

In a dog so young, if it were one of mine I would go to the Vets.  It could be allergy related, bacterial or mites etc.

dont get me wrong i can afford taknig them to the vet, but i prefer asking online first to see if its maybe just a simple cream thats needed.
I asked on a staffy forum and they said its really commen for staffys to get reshes on there bald bits, but im just worried it kinda gets worse if you know what i mean?
Her diet is good she is on RAW and she also gets Orijen.

Sounds like a grass rash to me. 2 out of my 4 boxers get it this time of year and it doens't bother them. Sometimes they advance to tiny pustules but like I say it doesn't bother them so I leave it well alone and it goes away on its own.
HTH, aimi.

thanks for this. Its not a big rash....its just a wee one, looks like a shaving rash!
Shes a smelly wee thing (or actual big thing! shes very boyish) when she gets excited or has been running around you can almost smell her sweating!! Its weird as all the staffys we have had have been like that!! pongy!

im so glad i have pugs in my house hold! they dont tend to get that sweaty smelly way!

Apart from everyone else's suggestions, I would pop some Aloe on it a few times a day.  Just a thought does she wear a body harness when walking?  These can sometimes cause a bit of soreness for close coated breeds.

yeh she does wear a harness and i actually thought that it may be that. I have some Aloe in the house i will use that and keep her on collar and lead for a week and see what happens. If it was really angry and sore and itchy i would take her to the vet, i just dont think a wee rash needs the vets attention. Its not bothering her at all.

Im sure she was meant to be a boy, shes SO un lady like and is still growing at a fast rate of knots!!

Clean the area with antibacterial wash and let it dry, I wouldn't really be putting things on it. Cleaning it and letting the air at it will clear it up if it is nothing.  If if doesn't clear up then you know the vet is needed.   Putting things on Rashes is not often the best idea IMHO.

yeh i will give it a till wednesday to see if it clears up. I have a pup going in to get chipped so will take ehr then with me. would hibiscrub be ok?

thanks for your help!

I'd say bathe it with very diluted Hibiscrub and allow it to air dry. Don't apply any creams; they tend to only make things worse.

try the Hibiscrub, dry well and pat on cornflour as often as you can.

Another vote for very dilute Hibiscrub and nothing else

I would suggest you gently pat the area dry afterward as it's quite a sweaty area and the damp might irritate the dog and prompt her to scratch.

One of mine did this years ago and it was due to a severe grass allergy.  The grass she'd been in for a cuople of days wasn't your normal every day grass LOL.  We didn't go there again and she never hd a problem again.

Yip Hibiscrub is the best really. Dilute down I would say 10 to 1 clean over and let dry. Forget any powder etc.   Fingers crossed.
