Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Yorkie won't eat enough
- By KaneFizz [gb] Date 18.08.10 20:34 UTC
Hello there everyone and thank-you for reading.
I have a 2 year old Yorkie who simply refuses to eat enough. The packet of RC Yorkshire Terrier recommends 110g as she weighs 4.25kg. I put her food down and she will eat 45g per day and nothing else.
She used to have chicken everyday but the vet advised me to stop this because her teeth were getting in bad shape. I leave her food down all day. I have tried the 10 minute rule but she isn't bothered and doesn't even notice i've taken it up. She is only interested in human food.
Asince I started this gradual Change to dried food she has lost 0.1kg however her fur is more shiny.
I have tried mixing with gravy, dog meat nothing entices her to eat.

I really don't know what to do now.

Please help

Most of the recommended amounts on food if fed would result in  an obese dog.

I know no-one in any breed that feeds the amounts suggested, if they have a dog that is correct weight.

It is very easy to overestimate how much your little dog needs.

If you can feel the ribs but not play a tune on them, then the dog is fine.

Do you feed any treats, biscuits etc.  You would be surprised, one milk bone or such like dog biscuit would equal a fair amount for such a small dog.

His weight sounds fien if he is a standard size, but teh breed can have a wide variance in size if you take the average pet bred (not to standard) dogs often seen that are the size of a Jack Russell or Cairn, which of course would need to weigh more.

The breed standard says re size:

Size
Weight up to 3.2 kgs (7 lbs).

I have toy breeds and have to say that mine eat better when given a mix of wet and dry.  I am not a lover of totally dry feeding - just my preference.

If you want to try a tried and tested feed that is intended to encourage appetite, I would try the Royal Canin mini sensitive.  It does encourage poor eaters.

I think we need to ascertain though if the OP just thinks her dog should eat more, or if it actually NEEDS to eat more and it is too skinny.

Thankyou everyone so much for your help.

She isn't really skinny but I can feel her ribs and she is hungry but she just refuses to eat. She is standard size about 11inch.

She would rather get human food but I'm not going to give her any....or should I?

You should be able to feel her ribs and she should have a waist.

The little Minx is playing on your feelings.

Put food down for 10 minutes and pick up until next meal time (I am assuming two meals a day).

She will not come to any harm even if she goes several days without eating at all (unlikely), and when she realises she will not be getting anything else she will eat what she needs.

A trick is if she leaves some food give her less next time until she clears what you give, then once she is looking around for more you can increase it a little at a time but obviously only to the amount she needs to keep at a Nice steady weight.

I too have a very fussy dog (toy poodle) I now feed Natures menu in tins and Arden Grange mini lamb and rice. I have 2 toy poodles the younger one is not a problem to feed, they both weigh around 5 kgs each and they have half a tin each of the natures menu ( it is a 400g tin so they get 200g each per day) which is less than it says on the tin which suggests 300g each per day. I then fill 2 kongs with the Arden Grange for them and some days they will eat some and other days none at all but as long as they have eaten their natures menu I don't worry as the vet tells me that they are a good weight. I used to give them Royal canin mini sensible but when Arden Grange brought out their mini kibble I tried that and as they seemed to eat it ok I stuck with it as so many people on this forum said what a good food this was. Hope this helps you.
