HI Guys, I am currently an owner of a German shepherd (4years), 2 10 month old kittens and am picking up my gorgeous baby PUG puppy on sept 1st! I am a bit concerned about everyone eating everyone elses food!! obviously puggy will be on different food to German Shepherd, She currently eats from the kitchen, Kitten food bowls are in the front room... Any advice? Maybe move the kittens food back upstairs where they sleep?

Also i have been recommended by breeder to feed Pug puppy Beta food as it is the best budget food and she feeds that to her puglets, however she feeds her adults arden grange? I want the best for my little puglet, German shepherd eats wet food tins (winalot) VERY fussy and wont eat anything else!!

Yes I would move the kittens' food upstairs providing the dogs don't go up there! Baby gates are useful. Maybe when the kittens are older you can feed them on a kitchen counter or on top of a freezer out of the dogs' reach? Or even have a baby gate for the kitchen so the dogs can't get in there when there's cat food down.

i have a similar problem , having 2 cats and 2 dogs 1 is  gsd the other being chi x. Cats in this house have always been fed on the worktop they soon learn to jump up there and as kittens just needed a bit of help.
The dogs are fed in separate areas if yours are anything like mine the little one dominates and soon puts big boy in his place if he so much as looks at her food. bayby gates are also useful.

I've always had to be careful about cat food, as if my dog manages to eat any he scratches non-stop for about 12-24 hours afterwards (makes you wonder what they put in it! lol). When mine was a kitten I managed to fix up a small dog crate so the end door was firmly fixed open at cat-width but not dog-head width, and she was fed in there. She had another small crate similarly fixed up for her litter tray (cat tray crunchies = yum yum for dogs). Might be an option if you are finding things difficult.

Now she's grown up she's fed on worktops, or on top of the freezer in the back porch, well out of dog's reach.

PS: Much of the time she is now fed raw, so if dog does snaffle it there's no repercussions and she's a lot heavier and fitter than when fed solely on commercial cat foods.

Dogs all eat in separate rooms, we have 3 dogs here.
Only have 1 cat left and when he walks away we try and pick up any remaining food or its gone within seconds of the dogs coming in..

I never had a problem feeding them all together.  They did have to learn including the cats to leave each others food alone but it was achieved. 
Tea time they were all lined along together, its great to watch.

i am glad there areothers who feed their cats on the worksurfaces. non animal people look at me in horror if they find that out however as my cats go where they like anyway the sit on the worktops anyway.
I am just very careful with cleaning up and whats a hair or two between friends.
Yours are great sunshine my cats have always been grazers so cant see it ever working with the dogs here !

and heres another!Its the only way!Have you noticed that cats will steal dogfood,but you run out of catfood and offer dogfood,and its suddenly poison?Im raw feeding a lot now,though,so it doesnt matter so much!

Raw does help! But my cat will eat canned Butchers Tripe in an emergency!

I have woos,cats and kittens and they all have raw.They are fed seperately but if the dogs, particuarly my oldie isn't quick enough eating then the 2 adult cats will eat out of the same bowl as Spook is eating(unusual for Malamutes).
My dear Dad has a soft spot for my dogs and for some reason - and he knows I fed raw,buys 12 tins of dog food a week.Always has lol.So i mix in alittle daily for the dogs,but the cats go mad for it despite me telling the cats its bad for them - especially if the dogs find out lol.

Wish my cats would agree to go raw ! the next kitten I have is going raw from day one  with the dogs

I have thought of getting a raised feeder for my GSD? has anyone used one of these??

Yep, brilliant and great for large/giant breeds.
I know a lot of people use buckets and place bowls on those, anything really to raise the bowl. You may find a cheaper way of doing it?

Following gastric torsion with one of my gsds I have read extensively on this subject and in the main the thinking seems to be we shouldn't use them. It seemed to me was long way down to the food so have compromised and cut the stands down. I would recommend reading up on this subject.

I had to raise the bowl for Henry in the last months of his life, we looked at feeders but they were ridiculously expensive and usually had food and water divisions whereas we only wanted food. In the end we used a cardboard box of icing sugar!!!

I have a raised stand for my 11 yr old boy who often who chuck his foood back; whilst I can't prove that this has helped ( as I have changed a few things I do) I have to say he looks a lot more comfortable. I think he feels a bit superior to the other dogs too!! :)
