Health / Any ideas what could have caused this back/side sensitivity?
My 11 mth old ridgeback girl has had a 5 day course of galastop for her phantom (milk production)
she is happy, eating well, racing around, essentially back to normal, boobs are much less etc
But when I stroke her back or sides, she suddenly twitches her side down and begins scratching with her back legs under her belly, she is not in the least itchy at any other time.
She does not appear to be in pain but does whip her head towards you in a cross manner and circles. on a couple of occasions her back legs have kind of sunk down and she has stumbled.
Yet trotted out or galloping with our other girl she is as fluid as ever.
Vet says he can all but rule out a reaction to the meds... But it came on the day after she started it, she finished course on Tuesday so been off it 5 dys and no change.
Vet wants to start xrays/bloods and perhaps scans to rule out a serious issue tomorrow
Has anyone heard anything similar
She has no fleas, no itchiness, skin and coat is perfect... cannot understand
TIA

I know one of mine has what i call an "itchy scratchy spot". Touching a certain part of him makes him scratch his underbelly. He too has nothing wrong with him, also an old Lab did the same, again nothing wrong with him.
Hi thanks
this has come on suddenly she has never been touchy before and it is not one spot, it is her back sides, shoulder etc
thanks xxx
she def does not like it being touched

I would guess her food.
No change in diet at all. There is no irritation, no skin issues. My other dog has some issues so I know what I'm looking at.
I'm afraid I don't have any answers but one of mine has had a mild phantom at the moment, quite often when I touch her she flinchs as if I have been rough but all I have done is gone to stoke her; this is more noticeable on her shoulders and back.
Mybe get the vet to check her for a trapped nerve?

I would stand by hormones with the on set of phantom making her extremely sensitive to touch.
Food sensitivity manifests itself at anytime often out the blue and the wriggling when touched ( although may not be the case here) is a classic sign in my breed and may other terriers.
I was wondering about the hormone business, the vet has said he cannot see anything sinister as she is so well in herself. He says it could be a nerve thing BUT he said where it presents on her back he would expect movement to be curtailed and if anything she is more energetic and physical than usual.
He has said to slash her food for 3 days and up the exercise. And review on Friday
She's been on the same food since weaning pretty much... Vet said with a food issue he'd expect to see some skin issues...
So waiting and seeing
thanks for the replies
Jane :)
