I have a medium/large gundog breed who has been a wonderful mum to her 12 pups so far.  They are now 16 days old and I am wondering as it is a large litter if they and she will benefit from weaning now.

Pups are gaining and growing well, and very content, they feed until they fall asleep on her. She looks wonderful and eats loads and drinks lots. They are strong and walking around all with eyes open.

Should I try them with some well soaked watery kibble from a spoon, or is it a bit early?  I know they are doing well but I really feel for her having to sustain so many (they feed in shifts)

Is now the time or should I wait a few more days?

Mum is eating nature diet puppy/junior  and skinners puppy mixed as and when she wants it, and is drinking goats milk/water mixed.

Edited to add, one of the bigger pups tried to get to her food earlier, if they are showing interest does that mean it is time?

Sorry for all the questions, this is the first litter for us both.

I'd start them now, but then I have started pups in my own breed as soon as their eyes open if I thought their weight gain was levelling off.

Are they showing any sign of int erst in Mums food (assuming it is offered in the whelping box)?

I start mine regardless at 18 days as I like to have them on solids before worming, finding it less likely to have problems with the worming if they have it after some food.

Thanks Barbara.

Well I went for it, and it  was messy lol!  Mum thought she would help so she had the left overs.

They all seemed very keen, but I only gave them a tiny spoonfull.

Good advice about the worming, hadn't thought of that. It does make sense to get them on solids.

I give them one taste the first day two the second so by Fourth day they are on 4 tiny meals, after that it is to appetite with Mum clearing up what is left.
