where could I find german dog names?
- By Polly [gb] Date 15.10.01 21:54 UTC
I name my dogs by using a "baby name book", for their pet names, there must be a similar book for german names. Most English books will give the origin of the name, as well as the variations. I call my dog Trefor, which is the correct way to spell Trevor. Trefor is Welsh in origin and there are no "v"s in Welsh.
For their pedigree names I pick a theme, usually flowers and trees. Wood Sage in German is called "Master of the Wood, which I think is apt for a gundog. Some years ago I remember "Doggie Hubbard" was selling books with names in for dogs in various languages, I bought the Russian edition for a friend with borzois.

I must admit, most working gundogs will answer to the name "Oie You" usually accompanied by some Anglo Saxon!

PS. Sorry, I'll try to be good!

Leigh that's what I did when trying to find a name for Harris. Trouble was I couldn't bloody pronounce half of them

Ended up sticking with a Scottish name, although the amount of people who ask how come Harris is a Scottish name is beyond belief ;-)

You'll never guess what we did though, only rang up a tiny post office on the Isle of Harris and asked them for the gaelic spelling, it was so complicated I can't even remember it, think the woman thought we were a bit mad :p

LOL :-)

Yes, I know what you mean about the german names Claire. Some are a real mouthful aren't they!! Nearly all Italian names end with either O (usually for males) or A (usually for females)!! I have decided that our bitch will break tradition and her name will end with a double O :D and have nothing to do with Italy ...lol
