I have a litter of 6+ week old Terriers.  I have always weaned my puppies on a variety of foods so I can tell new owners what doesn't suit them etc.  Mum is now only popping in occasionally for a very short time, so virtually reliant on what I feed them and doing very well.

These pups are mainly eating Royal Canin Mini and love it - not now being soaked.  I have given them most varieties of the 'named' brand puppy canned food and it always seems to upset their tummies, not as bad as it was initially and not all puppies now - clears up ok on its own by next meal but I would like them to be able to tolerate some additional type of food before they leave me.  I have tried this afternoon Butchers puppy food in a tray with Laughing Dog puppy meal and hope that will be ok.

They don't seem too bad on raw mince but obviously not all owners are happy to feed raw etc.  Do many people just feed their puppies on a complete food?

Advice/opinions most welcome.

I feed mainly complete with like you one meal with something else, either raw meat/tripe, or the only tins I will use are Butchers Tripe Mix, and the Arden Grange ones.  Forthglade trays also go down well, with no looseness.  The odd chicken wing etc too.

It was the Butchers tins that upset them - have given them a tray tonight and so far looks ok.

My toy breeds do well on RC mini junior.  I have to admit that I have never soaked it.  They start licking at mums in the whelping box, and I let them.

I too use Butcher's puppy in the trays.  I just have this "thing" about giving totally dry food.  And most new puppy owners are familiar with Butcher's.  I once tried their puppy in the sachet with gravy.  Just the once!  Never again!  :-(

By the time mine leave home they have usually tasted chicken, fish, scrambled egg etc.

Was that the tripe mix?  Wouldn't use the others.

It's the 6 pack of Butchers canned puppy - 3 varieties - beef, rabbit & chicken all with tripe.  Is there another sort of Butchers canned puppy?  They have tollerated the tray better - so will stick with that for the time being.

I feed my pups RC maxi junior and they have either Forthglade puppy or Natures Diet puppy mixed in with it too. They also have chicken and freeflow mince and now am trying to introduce a few mushed up veggies in too. :)

With the butchers I don't use the canned puppy or the varieties only the original Tripe mix.  I don't like tinned foods as a rule at all.

Am with Brainless, don't bother with the Puppy Butchers. I too mix in the normal tinned Butchers Tripe with my pups meals, not all, once a day. But it is the 'tripe' version as opposed to their gravy casserole types.

My pups (7 weeks today) are getting raw minced meat in with their puppy mush too, plus scrambled egg, poached fish in goats milk. Don't worry about what owners will feed, you can tell them what you've been feeding and leave it up to them whether they continue adding raw meats, etc.  I also boil up minced lamb, chicken and beef. Pets at Home do some nice frozen mince, 80p a 400g block (my pups favourite is rabbit), or £1.50 for fish. The fish I poach in goats milk, then add the soaked puppy food with it. The rabbit and other meats I've just tossed in raw. I will be advising my pup owners that this is what I've been doing, I can't see many would object, it's so easy and I'm not proposing a raw diet as I don't have the knowledge to do so. Also vary whether the fresh meat/fish/egg goes in with soaked pup food or whether in with the dried meals.

Oh, just to add, mine will be getting a raw carrot this week to chomp on!

I used to use the adult Butchers but tried the puppy when it became available in supermarkets here and not had a problem with my other breed's pups.  Will get some adult when next out - had raw minced beef this afternoon and all ok at the moment....
I only occasionally feed my adults on canned food and all of them can tolerate anything apart from Chappie!

Thanks Trialist - I have only another week to 'experiment' with them but good to know Pets at Home do a good range of frozen.
