Topic Other Boards / Foo / What TV Adverts Really Annoy You?
1 2 Previous Next
- By bevb [gb] Date 12.08.10 09:27 UTC
I don't watch much tele but it seems the two adverts that really annoy me always come on when I do.
They are the Tresemee advert which is just so false, as if any of us would walk in a hair salon and that would happen and be said, they can't even act or make the voice sound convincing.
The other one is the "Go Compare" adverts. I find them so annoying that if I need to shop or get quotes for something I will look anywhere, but cannot use thier site. Which surely shows thier ad doesn't work because it puts me off ever using them.

So come on what adverts really annoy you and would they stop you using what they are advertising?

GO COMPARE!
Great, now that song is STUCK in my head :)
- By Nova Date 12.08.10 09:44 UTC
Most of them but particularly Go Compare and any that shout at me or treat me like an idiot, at the moment the one I like is a young lad who smashes up his family car by operating the automatic garage door instead of his toy radio car - but I have no idea what it is advertising I just view it for entertainment.
- By Chrissy [gb] Date 12.08.10 10:02 UTC
Definately the Go Compare ads, not just because of the song but the awful man with the moustache.  And anything with Cheryl Cole in it.  There is no way i'd look like her if i used EVERYTHING that she advertised.
- By Lisakom [gb] Date 12.08.10 10:08 UTC
Most definitley "Go Compare" and also "we buy any car" any any any any Arrrggghhh!!!
- By Tadsy Date 12.08.10 10:13 UTC
For me it's Dulcoease (as if all us ladies talk about is stool firmness at the dinner table!), and there's one for incontinence pads/panty liners.

I think a lot of the time the voices are added on after, maybe even originally filmed in a different language, which doesn't help with making them sound sincere.
- By Chrissy [gb] Date 12.08.10 10:35 UTC
You mean you don't!!  I thought that was compulsory dinner table talk.

The other one i really hate, and it's one of those dubbed ones (probably from Swedish or something else obscure) is the obnoxious little boy who want to have a poo in someone else's house but i cant remember what its an advert for, maybe air freshener or something.  Actually i really hate most ads with little kids and their toilet habits.
- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 12.08.10 10:42 UTC
I hate the dubbed ones. But the ones that get me yelling at the screen is the feminine protection ones, obviously written by a bloke. "Have a happy period!" - I don't think so!!!!! :( also I think they are against trading standards as I have never been able to skydive.
Also, why do all the laundry ones have women featured, where are the men?? Pleased to say that hubby does all the ironing, he finds it " relaxing"- odd I know but I would hate to spoil his fun :)
- By Robert K Date 12.08.10 10:45 UTC
The toothpaste ads where the supposed member of the public extols the virtues of a particular brand of toothpaste, they're always filmed in a chic apartment sitting on the floor, don't they have chairs? or a modern office leaning against a desk, again what's wrong with the chairs, and have blindingly white teeth that never came out of a tube of toothpaste in a million years.
- By Chrissy [gb] Date 12.08.10 10:45 UTC
And the Adios one with the girl who gets out of bed looking immaculate and then dances out of the house and along the street in her knickers.  Mind you, i'm only jealous as i last had a body like that about 30 years ago and even if i overdosed on Adios i'd never look like that again.
- By sam Date 12.08.10 10:59 UTC
anything that shows childen and their pre toilet training bodily functions. YUK :((( I dont want to see children on the toilet when i watch tv. (and as an aside I adore the cow who wants to be a horse!!!!!)
- By Gemma86 [gb] Date 12.08.10 11:03 UTC

> Most definitley "Go Compare" and also "we buy any car" any any any any Arrrggghhh!!!

Oh it's bad enough having go compare in my head, now i have a duet of "go compaaaaaaare, we buy any car dot com, we buy any.......go compare, we buy any"
- By Olive1 Date 12.08.10 11:07 UTC
that dubbed one with the little kid on the loo who runs out of bog paper. He's obviously having a number two, not something I need to know when eating my tea!
- By Dukedog Date 12.08.10 11:22 UTC
I love compare the meerkats ad.
- By Chrissy [gb] Date 12.08.10 11:25 UTC
Me too, but the only downside is that people have been buying them as pets.  What is that about?  They are social animals, living in family groups.  How are pet shops allowed to sell them?  Some people are just so guillable and have to have the latest fad without any real thought going into it.  Sorry, sounding off again, must be the day for it!
- By Linz13 [gb] Date 12.08.10 11:33 UTC
I detest the Go Compare one and We Buy Any Car.  Tell me, what has a woman doing keepy uppy got to do with selling a car!!  Total rip off anyway!

Love the Specsavers one with the wee boy smashing his parents car with the garage door.
- By Justine [gb] Date 12.08.10 11:47 UTC
I hate most of them but moreso the early morning ones when you are trying to eat your brekky.

Ear wax, piles, thrush, fungal nail infections, veruccas and wart removers!  Just what you want at that time of the morn :) :)

The ones already mentioned are very irritating too.  When they annoy you, they seem to appear more lol.

Another one is the safestyle window adverts.

I also hate the Christmas ads when they start in September and the holiday ones that appear the day after Christmas too :)  The list is endless lol. This could end up a very long thread :)
- By Chrissy [gb] Date 12.08.10 11:51 UTC
Can you believe how we are all so motivated to reply to this.  Must mean the adverts are having some effect on us all, even if its not the effect they wanted.    I agree though, all the medical stuff is just not right.  Do we really need all those?
- By Daisy [gb] Date 12.08.10 12:18 UTC
Most adverts are pretty bad - but my favourite over the last few years has to be the Specsavers one where the sheepdog is shorn :) :) :)

Wooohooo, one good reason for not having a tele!

Well, actually I do, but only watch dvd's and videos, not one bit of television, it's great :)
- By LJS Date 12.08.10 12:43 UTC
Christmas ones ;-) :-D
- By Tadsy Date 12.08.10 12:44 UTC

>> You mean you don't!!  I thought that was compulsory dinner table talk.

Whilst I consider it normal to discuss the firmness of the woofits motions (as I would imagine most of you do), it's not usually dinner table talk - and I can't say I've ever sat down with my friends to discuss my toilet habits. Another thing that gets me about that particular advert, is they've obviously tried to style it on Sex and the City. Blonde, Red, Dark and scatty!

>> Actually i really hate most ads with little kids and their toilet habits.

Agree entirely, there's one at the moment on a Toy Story theme. Sounds like I watch far too much telly, and am a miserable old moo - actually probably correct on both counts!
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 12.08.10 12:46 UTC
I channel surf through the adverts as I hate it when they increase the volume when the adverts come on- drives me nuts! What has really annoyed me lately though is the trailer for Penguin Island and that woman who says 'We come to see the pinguin" Agggghhhhhhhh
- By Blue Date 12.08.10 13:05 UTC
Trust you Lucy :-D :-D   what would we do without you at Xmas time :-)
- By Blue Date 12.08.10 13:10 UTC
My hubby loves that.

I love the Spec saver twist on the Barclay card one.. Well I love the barclay card one and laughed my head off at the specsaver spoof..

My worst nightmare... The first ad mentioned is my all time hated advert..

I just have to mention my favourite which is the Coca-Cola ad at Xmas!! Holidays are Coming!!(Not wishing winter here or anything)....
- By LJS Date 12.08.10 14:43 UTC
Xmas

I no what have I started. It is only mid August and we have had the C or X word mentioned twice in one thread and once by me  :-D
- By Dill [gb] Date 12.08.10 15:34 UTC
Hate all the 'SHOUTY' adverts  Silly Bang was as bad as the Go Compare and Safestyle ones which I HATE!!!

Hate the adverts which try to get in loads of spoken info rightattheend, you'd have to record and play them on sloooow to understand what they are saying anditsoundsreallynaff.

the ADIOS one winds me up a treat, she may be dancing but it's only from the side effects of ADIOS which they don't talk about because they are so nasty   that's why she isn't sitting at the table with the Dulcoease girls, she'd feel right out of it

the Lynx 'naked man' advert is awful, no-one who looks like that should be seen unclothed LOL

The Special K advert is another I hate, I've bought endless boxes of the stuff in the past and still don't look like that in a red dress - or any other dress for that matter, so maybe trading standards should get on to them!

Rosetta Stone advert, implies that it is SOOO effective that EVERYONE is using it, millions of people worldwide blah blah!  but if that's true, why are they advertising?, why is it that it isn't selling by word of mouth?  if it's that good it should be flying off the shelves and they'd have no need to advertise ;)

Surveys  done in the past have proven that advertising doesn't actually work, but most companies have an advertising budget so feel they have to spend it

Really LOVE the specsavers adverts, especially the poor dog getting sheared and the new one with the little boy and the cars :-D  - I'm not so grumpy really :)
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 12.08.10 17:36 UTC
What happened to all the adverts that actually sold real products, not services? Bring back the old, real ads.....

I channel surf too during ads.

Oh, and I was told that they turn up the sound during ads as they know most people go to the loo, or put the kettle on, and they want to make sure you hear them  -)
- By Mayvis [gb] Date 12.08.10 19:21 UTC
I love the muller yoguhrt ad with the cow that wants to be a horse.

As I'm originally a Shropshire Lass, I love the other muller ad showing where it comes from with all the lovely cows and rolling, green fields of Shropshire!!

Also love the eurostar ad with the girl saying hello to all the foreign animals but they don't understand her.
And then a cute wee english speaking parrot comes down from a tree to say hello to her. Sooooo sweet.
- By HuskyGal Date 12.08.10 19:39 UTC
Cheryl Cole in the L'oreal ads advertising how well nourished her hair is...... Well if it's so well nourished why does she wear fake hair extensions in it!!!?????

I also love the Specsavers shorn sheepdog advert - Does anyone know what the music is playing it??
- By Dill [gb] Date 12.08.10 19:55 UTC Edited 12.08.10 20:01 UTC

>Cheryl Cole in the L'oreal ads advertising how well nourished her hair is...... Well if it's so well nourished why >does she wear fake hair extensions in it!!!????? confused

that would be the incredibly glossy and well nourished hair of "a friend"  ROFL

"My hair's got it's 'mojo' back"  - No love it's got someone elses 'mojo'   :-D :-D

the music from the Specsavers ad  http://www.tvadmusic.co.uk/2008/02/specsavers-sheep-dog-shearing/

Might be able to buy it or download it :-D

   Thank-you for finding that.
- By bilbobaggins [gb] Date 12.08.10 20:59 UTC
The whiskas ad... "alfie comes back for HIS dinner" next doors tortie ??

The "you buy one you get one free, I said" window ad.

Lloyds TSB , my GSP sings along to, so I like that one and the Meer kat ads make me smile... Simples ;-)

Always happy to help :-D :-D

> would they stop you using what they are advertising?

There is an ad for glasses (not Specsavers) with really weird and spooky eyeballs on legs.  I absolutely loath it.

I would rather go round bumping into things than go for an eye test with them.
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 13.08.10 01:09 UTC
None any more--I gave my TV away earlier this year, best thing I've done in terms of clutter!

But the ad I LOVED was the little Parson Russell for VW singing Spencer Davis "I'm a Man" :) :) :)

- By hairyloon [gb] Date 13.08.10 10:18 UTC
I loved the 'I'm a man' song too!!!

I hate shouty ads, 'you buy one, you get one free' man needs gagging!!! As does the Cillt Bang bloke. And as for the boy who needs to do a poo in pauls house, the dulcoease/immodium/other bodily function products - I don't want to hear about poo when I'm sitting down to eat my dinner thank you very much. I have enough clearing up after the cat & dog without having to listen to people n the TV talking about poo.

I like the pedigree ad with the sheepdog the runs up to the scarecrow and then goes & steals a welly out of the chicken shed! And the cow that wants to be a horse. The new Anchor advert with the cows making the butter is good too, I'd love to know who sang the song as it's a fab cover of G'n'R Paradise City, it works well as a country song :-)

Claire -who is easily enraged by adverts!!!
- By LucyMissy [gb] Date 13.08.10 11:56 UTC

>>(and as an aside I adore the cow who wants to be a horse!!!!!)

I absolutely love this one!!

But I really do HATE the Just for Men adverts... drive me insane - Note to all men: Please embrace the grey and do not resort to dye!!!!!
- By Whistler [gb] Date 13.08.10 12:55 UTC
I agree its awful stick to the spec savers with the sheepdog - classic and the new one with the car remote control.

I hate Go compare as well, and ones that i just dont get like Guiness - what is that all about too surreal for me. Sorry M&S food, I shout at the tv her voice is so sickly it really annoys.

I love Meerkats one must have made the bloke (or lass) that thought that one up a bonus.

I also hate the new Milkybar Kid one pants! and what gives with the Magane can a car change a town - I dont think so!
- By Whistler [gb] Date 13.08.10 12:58 UTC
Faulous I got goosebumps as well.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 13.08.10 14:58 UTC
Love the Meerkat one.  Call one of my Spanish Water Dogs Simples now as she looks like one, my dad started it, she has the same markings and dark brown rings around her eyes and she stands on her back legs most of the time LOL!
- By bevb [gb] Date 13.08.10 15:54 UTC
I hate the meercats one.   Seems like i may be the only one though!
- By huskypup [gb] Date 13.08.10 17:44 UTC
I avoid ads by recording most programmes then I just ffwd :-)

I do too, think it's rubbish but this thread is making me laugh out loud.   People's comments at the pooey child, Dulcoease etc. have really had me laughing.
- By Tessies Tracey Date 14.08.10 08:18 UTC
To be honest, most Australian TV ads make me cringe lol
There is a lady who seems to voiceover most ads on the TV and radio, and she has THE most annoyingly, smarmy voice.  She's trying to sound sexy, but it just sounds silly.
A lot of the ads here seem to be very 'shouty' too.

I haven't seen any UK ads for over a year now, but a couple I've seen other people comment on I would agree with.
Namely; Just for Men, Go compare, etc.
Oh and the daft perfume/aftershave ones that you think are going to be adverts for something else, but you have now grown wise to the fact that they are, in fact, just silly smutty perfume / aftershave ads :)
- By Vanhalla [gb] Date 14.08.10 08:21 UTC
My all time least favourite ad was the Aero Melt campaign that ran a couple of years ago with a half naked model swanning around his house in a towel chomping on choccy.  His smarmy, knowing self-awareness and the cynical use of his sexuality was repulsive.  The telly got turned over every time as he made me feel physically sick.  I don't like overly-confident men anyway, so it's not surprising.  Besides which, any bloke nicking my chocolate is likely to get decked.  :-)
Oh and the Davidoff Adventure one with Ewan McGregor was hilariously scripted - how he kept a straight face I don't know.
