They are a good little spaniel. The one which won 4th in gundog group at Crufts this year, also works, as do his relatives. Niriti Brown Hairstreak, (Barty as he is called), used to come on our shoot for quite a few years until they moved up north. They work slower than a springer but they do have good noses for game and do a super job beating in rough cover.

Have you considered a clumber instead?

On our shoot we have had clumbers, sussex and field spaniels working in the beating line. Our picking up dogs are flatcoats. As I like to try to offer the minority breeds the chance to try their hand at the work they were designed for we have had a few of the more unusual breeds working there. We have also got two older springer spaniels which came from the Blue Cross, which have been trained by our local policeman to go beating. One was put into the Blue Cross because it was supposedly "gunshy" the other because it was destructive.
