I know of plenty of singletons that are no problem whatsoever.  Several folk have posted on here recently with very positive opinions on them.

My Border Collie was a singleton, and his temperament is superb.  Exactly what problems are you expecting?

I had a singleton cocker 3 years ago and she's great, a lovely little girl, she was born by c-section though as she weighed just over 1lb.

I have a singleton. She is nearly 12 years old and still runs rings round us all :-) She just loves people, so long as they are over about 7 years old (she's going deaf and blind now) When she was a puppy I used to carry her when I took the other dogs out so she met up with people from a very early age. I found I spent more time with her so she was easier to train.

I think the biggest worry for me with a singleton would be a big pup in a very small breed but otherwise no issues. You just need to play and interact with them a lot as they have no siblings. I found Tuppence was shy until about 9 months- She hadn't had the opportunity to observe other pups trying new things out but she grew out of this.

I have a 3 week old singleton, so far no problems except she is developing way in front of average, I think it's because she was born nearly a week later than expected. She opened eyes at 8 days, was standing at 2 weeks, and now has teeth!! I've been out to buy a bunch of puppy toys to play with her, and hopefully her mum will help too! I have a friend relatively near who has a singleton of the same breed a day younger, and once vaccinations are done, if we are both keeping them, I plan to arrange some playdates.

I've had a few singleton pups born with no problems, all natural births.

I think the main issue is making up for the lack of litter-mates and learning about being a dog.  Not such an issue if you have a gang of adults that will puppy sit and play an teach canine communication.

If I may be allowed I would have thought the main problem would be the birth its self, I would be concerned that the single pup would not produce enough hormone to start off the labour and because of this a high risk of  c section.

I was really thining of the rearing not the birth.

I was really thining of the rearing not the birth.

May be you are right and that is what the OP was thinking too, but I like to add my twopeneth for what it's worth.

I was thinkin of birth and rearing, i have heard there can be a problem with there not being enough hormone to start labour, and the puppy being large.

i had my bitch scanned and was told she only had one puppy but went on to have 8 so you never know on the day she may well pop out a litter mate as well,  fingers crossed.

Well jst got back from the vets, an she said she woudnt be supprised it there was 2 in there!!! but cant be sure, if nothins happend by monday she wants to her again to see about a section!

Let's hope so - my girl did have to have a C-section because her singleton didn't start natural labour. She had no trouble with the 2 in the previous litter. But although I love playing with the puppy, it would be nice (at nearly 6 weeks) if there was a littermate for her to wear herself out with!

well all is well, no section needed, looked a little worrying at one point as peanut the puppy is quite large. but all is fine. now the work begins!!
