We have just started investigating the shetland collie. We knew someone that had one and the intelligence and the smaller size appealed to us since we would have it inside more than outside (if any.. just to do business). We also have a very rambunctious 3 year old boy and a house cat. I am wondering if getting an older dog would be better. I know we wouldn't have to go through housebreaking which is a plus because we did have a cat that had accidents sometimes and he had to become an outside animal. I couldn't handle that the baby would accidentally get in the "accident". We don't want that to happen to the dog. But I worry about the homing instinct in this type of dog.. would it ever run away if we turn our backs for a minute or two? Like I said we are just learning about the breed and how to even take care of a dog as opposed to a cat. We really want to do this correctly. Also we are in the upstate of South Carolina.. do you know of anyone in this area or even the Asheville, NC area that is a breeder or someone that is looking to adopt out?.. Thank you for any of the info you can provide.

Welcome to the forum Cindy.
May I suggest that you contact a breed club on your side of the pond :-) I am sure that they will be able to answer all of your questions and point you in the right direction. Have a word with The American Kennel Club who will provide you with breed club details.

Thank you Leigh, I wasn't sure where to go since I have never had to purchase a special breed of dog. When I typed in the name of the dog I was looking for this is the only site that came up for me. Thanks for helping me out.
